Chapter 15 - Milestones in the Sun

Two years had passed since the divorce was finalized. Ethan was now a talkative, joyful two-and-a-half-year-old who loved running through the sprinkler in the backyard, identifying birds in the neighborhood trees, and helping his mother "draw houses" with colorful crayons.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, Emma took Ethan and Martha to the Denver Botanic Gardens. The morning sun illuminated fields of lavender, red poppies, and towering sunflowers.

Ethan ran ahead down a gravel path, his small sneakers crunching rhythmically against the stone before he stopped to admire a bright blue butterfly resting on a flower pedal. "Look, Mommy! Look! A butterfly!" he squealed in delight.

"I see it, sweetie," Emma called out softly, walking alongside Martha.

Martha watched Ethan with deep affection. "He has your eyes, Emma. But more than that, he has your courage. He steps into the world without a single trace of fear."

"Because he has never known fear at home," Emma replied thoughtfully. "He has only known peace, stability, and love."

As they sat by the lily pond, Emma pulled out her notebook to sketch the garden pergolas for an upcoming project. As she drew, a comfortable silence fell between them. She thought about how far she had come—from the helpless, bleeding mother on a dark nursery floor to a flourishing business owner, a devoted mother, and a woman whole in her own right.

She no longer checked her shoulder when walking to her car at night. She no longer felt her heart race when the mailbox opened. The ghosts of her past had died from starvation, deprived of the fear they needed to survive.

Ethan ran back to the bench, dropping a small yellow flower into Emma’s lap with a proud grin. "For you, Mommy!"

Emma pulled her son into a warm embrace, kissing his golden hair as he giggled. "Thank you, my sweet boy. It’s the most beautiful flower in the whole garden."
