Chapter 19 - Whispers in the Wind

Spring returned to the high country with vibrant energy. Melting snow fueled cascading mountain streams, and green shoots covered the hillsides around Emma’s home.
On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, while Ethan was attending his local nature-based preschool, Emma received an unexpected phone call from an attorney in Chicago.
"Ms. Parker, I am calling regarding the final settlement of Mr. Ryan's estate affairs," the voice on the line stated matter-of-factly. "He has formally filed for personal bankruptcy and surrendered all remaining corporate assets. As part of the liquidation process, his legal team requested confirmation that no outstanding claims exist from your side."
Emma stood by her floor-to-ceiling office window, looking out over the blooming apple trees in her courtyard.
"There are no claims," Emma said, her voice clear and completely devoid of malice or sorrow. "The past is fully settled. Please convey that no further contact is permitted or necessary."
"Understood, Ms. Parker. The file is closed."
Hanging up the phone, Emma felt no rush of anger, no lingering sting of betrayal. Ryan’s descent into financial and personal ruin was the logical consequence of a life built on deceit and malice, just as her peace was the result of integrity and resilience. She felt only a profound, silent spaciousness.
When Ethan came home that afternoon, he ran into the studio carrying a handful of bright yellow dandelions he had picked at school. "Look, Mommy! Gold flowers for your desk!"

"They are magnificent, Ethan," Emma said, placing them in a crystal vase filled with water.
She held her son close, breathing in the sweet, clean scent of child’s play and warm sunshine. The ghosts of the past had no power here; they had been entirely replaced by light.
