Chapter 20 - The Unbroken Circle

Ethan’s fifth birthday was celebrated under a clear blue Colorado sky at the Haven Horizon Center’s public park. Dozens of families, friends, and community members gathered around picnic tables decorated with colorful streamers and wooden toy models.

Ethan stood proudly in front of a large chocolate cake, surrounded by children he had grown up alongside.

"Make a wish, Ethan!" Martha called out happily, holding up her camera.

Ethan closed his eyes tightly, blew out all five candles in a single breath, and the crowd burst into cheers.

Later in the afternoon, as the children played tag on the sprawling lawn, Martha sat beside Emma on a hand-carved stone bench overlooking the park.

"Look at what you’ve created, Emma," Martha said softly, her eyes glistening with pride. "Not just buildings, but a whole generation of children growing up in safety and joy."

"We created it together, Martha," Emma replied, sliding her hand into Martha’s. "When I was at my lowest, you gave me a place to stand. You showed me what true love looks like."

"You had the strength inside you all along, my dear. I simply held the mirror so you could see it."

As the sun began to set, casting long golden shadows across the grass, Ethan ran up to them, breathlessly dropping a smooth mountain river stone into Emma’s palm. "For your collection, Mommy. It’s completely smooth because the water washed all the rough edges away."

Emma looked down at the stone, feeling its polished surface against her skin. "It’s perfect, Ethan. Just like our life."
