Chapter 45 - The Light Through the South Beam

Ethan looked back at Arthur Vance, a tranquil, resolute expression in his eyes.

"Mr. Vance, I appreciate the offer. A few years ago, that offer would have been everything I thought I wanted," Ethan said smoothly, his voice grounded in absolute clarity. "But those luxury resorts and private estates... they’re built to isolate people from nature and from each other. They’re built for luxury, not for living."

Vance frowned slightly, confused. "Ethan, we’re talking about top-tier architectural recognition. You could design monuments."

"I am designing monuments," Ethan replied softly, gesturing toward the workshop and the people inside. "I'm designing monuments to human resilience. The work we do here gives people their lives back. No salary or high-profile portfolio can buy that."

Vance stared at Ethan for a long moment, searching the young man's face for any sign of hesitation or bluffing. Finding none, Vance let out a slow sigh and shook his head, a mixture of disappointment and profound respect in his eyes.

"You really mean it, don't you?" Vance asked.

"I do," Ethan said firmly.

Vance looked back up at the majestic wooden structure, taking in the light streaming through the massive glass panels, illuminating the busy, joyful artisans inside.

"I spent thirty years building glass towers in cities, Ethan," Vance murmured softly, a rare moment of vulnerability breaking through his corporate persona. "And not one of them has half the warmth this place has. If you ever decide you want to consult on human-centered design... my door is always open."

"Thank you, Mr. Vance," Ethan said, shaking the senior architect's hand once more.

As Vance drove away down the gravel road, Emma walked over to Ethan. She didn't need to ask what had happened; she had seen the calm certainty in Ethan’s posture throughout the conversation.

"You didn't hesitate for a second," Emma noted softly.

"Why would I?" Ethan smiled, placing his arm around her shoulder. "My home is right here."
