Chapter 26 - Echoes in the Canyon

Summer arrived with long, warm afternoons and clear, starlit mountain nights. Vance & Parker Architectural Design was selected to lead the restoration of an iconic historic theater in downtown Denver, further cementing Emma’s status as one of the region’s most visionary architects.

Despite her demanding career, Emma’s highest priority remained her home and family. Weekends were spent hiking the rugged trails of the Boulder canyons, exploring hidden waterfalls, and teaching Ethan how to navigate using a compass and map.

During one afternoon hike, while Martha rested on a wooden bench at a scenic overlook, Emma and Ethan climbed a rocky ridge that looked out over a deep, pine-filled canyon. The wind whistled through the high branches, carrying the clean scent of sap and granite.

"Mommy," Ethan said, looking down into the vast expanse below. "Did you ever feel scared when you were growing up?"

Emma sat on a flat boulder beside him, taking his hand in hers. "Sometimes I did, Ethan. Everyone feels scared at some point."

"What did you do when you were scared?"

"I remembered that fear is just a feeling, not a wall," Emma explained softly, looking out over the majestic canyon. "I looked for the people who truly loved me, like Grandma Martha, and I focused on taking one small step forward at a time. And slowly, the fear disappeared."

Ethan squeezed her hand tightly. "I'm never scared when I'm with you."

Tears of profound fulfillment touched Emma's eyes, though her smile remained bright and unbroken. "And you will never have to be, my brave boy. You are surrounded by strength."
