Epilogue 5: Sisters

Epilogue 5: Sisters

Five years later.

Caroline received another letter from prison.

This one was different.

Juliette had been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

She wasn't asking for money.

Or lawyers.

Only one final meeting.

Caroline arrived quietly.

Juliette looked frail.

Her hair had turned gray long before her time.

"I don't expect forgiveness," Juliette said softly.

"I know."

"I only wanted to thank you."

Caroline frowned.

"For what?"

"For telling the truth."

Juliette looked toward the prison window.

"If you hadn't come to my wedding..."

"I would have kept destroying everyone around me."

Silence settled between them.

Then Juliette reached into her pocket.

She handed Caroline a tiny silver locket.

"Our grandmother wanted you to have this."

"I stole it after the fire."

Caroline accepted it without opening it.

When the visiting hour ended, Juliette smiled faintly.

"Goodbye, big sister."

Caroline paused at the door.

She didn't say, I forgive you.

She didn't say, I hate you.

Instead, she said the only words that still mattered.

"I hope you finally find peace."

She walked away without looking back.

Weeks later, Juliette Mercer passed away quietly in prison.

Caroline attended the funeral alone.

There were no reporters.

No cameras.

No speeches.

She placed a single white rose on the grave.

Not for the woman Juliette became.

But for the little sister she had once loved before greed, fear, and lies consumed them both.

As Caroline turned toward the setting sun, she realized something she had waited eleven years to understand.

Justice had given her back her name.

But forgiveness...

May you like

Had finally given her back her life.

The End.
