Chapter 7: The Man Who Saved Caroline

Chapter 7: The Man Who Saved Caroline
Twenty-four hours after the wedding, the courthouse in downtown Los Angeles was surrounded by reporters.
News helicopters circled overhead.
Satellite trucks lined the streets.
No one remembered the last time a family scandal had attracted this much attention.
Inside Courtroom Four...
Caroline finally told the story she had kept buried for six years.
"I should have died that night."
Every juror listened in complete silence.
"The smoke had already filled the study."
"I couldn't breathe."
"I kept pounding on the locked door."
"No one answered."
She paused.
"Then I heard glass shatter."
Caroline looked toward the gallery.
"A man I had never met broke into the house."
The courtroom doors opened.
An older man wearing a sheriff's department dress uniform walked inside.
His silver badge reflected the courtroom lights.
Caroline smiled for the first time since returning.
"Deputy Daniel Brooks."
The courtroom recognized the name immediately.
The retired deputy took the witness stand.
"I was off duty."
"My wife and I owned the neighboring property."
He folded his hands together.
"We saw flames coming from the west wing."
"I called 911."
"Then I heard someone screaming."
The courtroom fell silent.
"I kicked in the back service door."
"The heat nearly pushed me back outside."
He swallowed hard.
"But I kept hearing a woman's voice."
"So I followed it."
Daniel described forcing open the burning study door with a steel fireplace poker.
"When I found her..."
"She was unconscious."
"The ceiling was already collapsing."
He looked directly at the jury.
"We escaped less than thirty seconds before the room caved in."
A large photograph appeared on the courtroom screen.
The destroyed study.
The collapsed ceiling.
Burn patterns covering every wall.
The fire investigator pointed toward the image.
"If Deputy Brooks had arrived one minute later..."
He paused.
"Miss Mercer would have died."
Juliette lowered her head.
She couldn't bear to look.
The prosecutor stood.
"Deputy Brooks..."
"Did the study door appear locked?"
"Yes."
"From which side?"
"The outside."
The prosecutor nodded.
"No further questions."
A heavy silence settled over the courtroom.
Then Caroline slowly stood.
She looked at Juliette—not with hatred, but with quiet certainty.
"I survived because one stranger valued my life more than my own family did."
Juliette closed her eyes.
For the first time...
She realized this wasn't simply a lawsuit anymore.

It was a murder trial waiting to happen.
