Chapter 4: The Witness Everyone Forgot

Chapter 4: The Witness Everyone Forgot
Juliette's accidental confession echoed through the ballroom.
"I panicked!"
The words hung in the air like smoke refusing to disappear.
No one spoke.
No one even breathed.
Nathan slowly lowered his phone.
"You were there."
It wasn't a question.
Juliette shook her head frantically.
"No... that's not what I meant."
"You just admitted you were at the house."
"I..."
Her lips trembled.
"I was trying to help."
Caroline's expression never changed.
"No."
"You were trying to save yourself."
One of the deputies stepped beside Caroline and handed her a sealed envelope.
She smiled faintly.
"Six years ago, I had only my memory."
She lifted the envelope.
"Today, I have witnesses."
The room instantly grew restless.
"Witnesses?"
"What witnesses?"
Caroline removed a notarized statement.
"The first witness is Mae Holloway."
Juliette's face lost every trace of color.
"No..."
Caroline noticed.
"So you remember her."
Douglas frowned.
"Mae?"
"The emergency room nurse?"
Caroline nodded.
"The woman your lawyers tried to silence."
Gasps rippled across the ballroom.
Caroline continued.
"After I was pulled from the burning house, I was unconscious for two days."
"When I woke up..."
"I overheard attorneys discussing how to classify me as an unidentified burn victim."
Nathan frowned.
"They wanted to erase your identity?"
"They already had."
Caroline looked toward Juliette.
"They needed me legally dead."
She unfolded another page.
"Mae Holloway refused to participate."
Instead of allowing Caroline to disappear into a private facility, the nurse secretly transferred her to a trauma center in Sacramento under temporary protection.
"She lost her career."
"Her reputation."
"Nearly her freedom."
"But she saved my life."
Guests stared at the notarized affidavit.
The deputy quietly confirmed,
"Miss Holloway is prepared to testify under oath."
Douglas slowly sat back down.
His hands wouldn't stop shaking.
"My own lawyers..."
"They lied to me."
Caroline answered without sympathy.
"They lied because someone paid them."
Every eye turned toward Juliette again.
"No!"
"I never paid anyone!"
Caroline calmly pulled another document from the folder.
"Then perhaps you'll explain these."
Bank transfers.
Private accounts.
Payments routed through shell foundations.
Legal consulting fees.
The ballroom erupted into whispers.
Nathan's father examined one page.
"These transfers began three days after the fire."
Another board member added,
"They total nearly twelve million dollars."
Douglas looked horrified.
"Twelve..."
He stared directly at his younger daughter.
"What have you done?"
Juliette burst into tears.
"I didn't kill anyone!"
"But you let everyone believe I was dead."
Caroline's voice remained almost gentle.
"And for six years..."
"You enjoyed everything that belonged to me."
May you like
Juliette couldn't answer.
Because it was true.
