Chapter 9: A Father's Choice

Chapter 9: A Father's Choice

The courtroom had barely regained order when the prosecutor stood once again.

"Your Honor..."

"The People call Douglas Mercer."

A stunned silence followed.

Douglas slowly rose from the gallery.

Every step toward the witness stand seemed heavier than the last.

He wasn't just walking toward the witness chair.

He was walking toward the truth he had avoided for six years.

After taking the oath, he looked first at Caroline.

Then at Juliette.

His eyes filled with tears.

"I failed both of my daughters."

The courtroom remained perfectly still.

The prosecutor asked gently,

"Mr. Mercer..."

"When did you first begin to suspect Caroline might still be alive?"

Douglas swallowed hard.

"The morning after the fire."

He looked down at his hands.

"The casket was sealed."

"I wanted to see my daughter's face."

"But my attorneys insisted it was impossible because of the burns."

He paused.

"I believed them."

Caroline closed her eyes.

For years she had imagined hearing those words.

They brought no comfort.

The prosecutor continued.

"When did you realize you'd been deceived?"

Douglas looked toward Juliette.

"At her wedding."

"When Caroline removed her veil..."

"I realized I had spent six years grieving the wrong daughter."

Juliette burst into tears.

"Dad..."

"Please..."

Douglas didn't respond immediately.

Instead, he reached into his jacket pocket.

"I have something."

He handed a small envelope to the prosecutor.

"What is this?"

"My resignation."

Everyone looked confused.

Douglas continued.

"I resigned this morning as Chairman of Mercer Holdings."

Gasps filled the courtroom.

"I've also signed documents restoring every voting right, trust interest, and family authority that legally belongs to Caroline."

Caroline stared at him in disbelief.

Douglas's voice broke.

"I can't undo what happened."

"I can't give you back six stolen years."

"But I can stop protecting lies."

Juliette stood abruptly.

"You can't do this!"

"I'm your daughter!"

Douglas slowly turned toward her.

"I have two daughters."

His voice was steady now.

"One lost her face trying to survive."

"The other lost her soul trying to win."

Juliette collapsed back into her chair.

The words hit harder than any sentence a judge could deliver.

The prosecutor smiled slightly.

"No further questions."

As Douglas stepped down from the witness stand, he walked past Caroline.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then, quietly...

"I'm sorry."

Caroline looked at the man who had once been her hero.

The apology came six years too late.

But for the first time...

It was real.

Outside the courthouse, news alerts flashed across every major network:

MERCER PATRIARCH RESIGNS.

FATHER TESTIFIES AGAINST HIS OWN DAUGHTER.

PROSECUTORS HINT AT ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES.

Inside the courtroom, Juliette finally understood that this was no longer about losing her inheritance.

She was about to lose her freedom.
