Chapter 5: The Inheritance of Lies

Chapter 5: The Inheritance of Lies

Douglas Mercer stood motionless beneath the crystal chandeliers.

For years he had believed he had buried one daughter.

Now he realized...

He might have abandoned her instead.

He slowly turned toward Juliette.

"Tell me."

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"Did you know Caroline survived?"

Juliette stared at the floor.

Silence.

Douglas asked again.

"Look at me."

She couldn't.

"I asked you a question."

Still nothing.

Finally...

She nodded.

Just once.

The movement was almost invisible.

But everyone saw it.

Estelle collapsed into tears.

"You knew..."

"My God..."

"You let us mourn her."

Juliette sobbed uncontrollably.

"I was scared."

"I thought she'd destroy everything."

Caroline stepped closer.

"Everything?"

"My inheritance."

"My future."

"My marriage."

"You mean the things you stole."

Nathan closed his eyes.

Every sentence shattered another piece of the woman he thought he loved.

He remembered all the times Juliette insisted on keeping discussions about the Mercer estate private.

The rushed changes to trust documents.

The strange secrecy whenever Caroline's name was mentioned.

It suddenly made sense.

Every single lie.

Caroline unfolded one final document.

"This is the original codicil to my grandmother's trust."

Douglas stared at it in disbelief.

"It still exists..."

"It always existed."

Caroline nodded.

"Someone tried to burn it."

"But they failed."

The document clearly stated that control of the Mercer family fortune belonged to the eldest daughter until she either voluntarily relinquished it or had a legal heir.

Neither had happened.

Which meant...

Juliette had never legally controlled the Mercer fortune.

Every business agreement.

Every board vote.

Every financial decision made in the last six years...

Was suddenly open to legal challenge.

Several Mercer board members quietly stood from their seats.

Nathan's father looked at his attorneys.

"We're leaving."

Nathan remained frozen.

Juliette reached for his arm.

"Please..."

He looked at her as though seeing a stranger.

"You lied to me every day we were together."

"I loved you."

"No."

His voice was calm.

"You loved what my last name could buy."

Those words broke her completely.

She fell to her knees in the middle of the ballroom, her wedding dress spreading across the white marble like spilled silk.

Around her, guests quietly walked away from the head table.

The celebration was over.

The wedding cake remained untouched.

The orchestra had stopped playing.

Champagne glasses sat abandoned on every table.

What had begun as the most prestigious wedding of the year had transformed into the public collapse of one of California's most powerful families.

And Caroline knew...

The wedding had only been the beginning.

The real battle would start in court.
