Chapter 15 - THE HOTEL FIRE

The smoke thickened.

Claire could hear people coughing in the hallway.

Daniel had blocked the fire lane with two construction trucks from a Bennett subcontractor. The hotel alarm system had been remotely disabled after the initial siren.

Maya tied bed sheets together.

“We go down one floor and break into the conference balcony.”

They were six stories up.

Lily began crying.

Claire held her face between both hands. “Look at me. We are getting out.”

Rachel opened the balcony door.

Cold air rushed in.

Marcus climbed over first, lowering himself onto the knotted sheets. Maya followed with the ledger strapped beneath her coat.

Evelyn refused.

“I cannot climb.”

Claire looked at the smoke rolling across the ceiling.

“Yes, you can.”

They wrapped a sheet around Evelyn’s waist and lowered her while Marcus guided from below.

Rachel climbed next carrying Lily against her chest.

Claire watched them descend.

For one second she felt something she did not expect.

Jealousy.

Rachel held Lily naturally, protectively.

Then shame followed.

There was room for more than one truth.

Rachel had given birth to Lily.

Claire had raised her.

Daniel had tried to turn that into war.

Claire climbed last.

The conference balcony door was locked. Marcus kicked it until the frame cracked.

They reached a service stairwell and descended as firefighters finally arrived from the rear entrance.

Daniel was gone.

The SUV remained.

Inside, police found a burner phone and a printed copy of Maya’s home address.

Daniel was arrested three hours later at Bennett Capital headquarters.

But he had prepared.

His lawyers produced security footage showing him entering the building before the hotel fire began. Phone records placed him on a business call.

The man outside the hotel had worn a realistic mask.

Claire’s certainty became legally useless.

Daniel was released.

Maya filed emergency motions in federal court to protect Lily and unseal the custody records. A judge scheduled a hearing for the next morning.

Before sunrise, social workers arrived at the hotel.

They carried an order removing Lily from Claire’s custody.

The order stated that Claire had exposed the child to a dangerous fire, associated with an unstable claimant, and stolen confidential evidence.

The judge who signed it was Arthur Vance.

Daniel’s godfather.

Maya read the document and said, “This order is illegal.”

The lead social worker answered, “Argue that in court.”

Lily screamed when they tried to take her.

Claire stood in front of the door.

“You will not touch her.”

The social worker signaled to two police officers.

Rachel stepped beside Claire.

“So will I.”

Maya warned them that physical resistance could become a felony.

Claire looked at Lily.

Then she moved aside.

It was the hardest thing she had ever done.

The officers carried Lily toward the elevator.

She reached over one shoulder.

“Mom!”

Claire followed until the doors closed.

“Where are they taking her?” she demanded.

The social worker would not answer.

Maya made calls for two hours.

Finally, a clerk disclosed the placement.

Lily had not been sent to foster care.

She had been placed with Daniel.

At noon, he posted a photograph online of himself hugging her.

The caption read:

SAFE AT HOME.

Then Claire received a private message from Lily’s tablet.

It contained only four words.
