Chapter 21 - THE COURTHOUSE TUNNEL

The tunnel ran beneath the county courthouse and connected to three older government buildings.
Arthur Vance had used it for years to move files, witnesses, and people without security cameras.
Rachel’s blood marked the concrete.
Claire followed it with federal agents.
They found her twenty yards inside, unconscious but alive.
Lily was gone.
A radio lay beside Rachel.
Vance’s voice came through.
“Bring Daniel Bennett to Courtroom Seven.”
Maya stared at the device. “He wants a prisoner transfer.”
Daniel agreed immediately.
Too immediately.
Claire confronted him in a secured transport room.
“You knew this tunnel existed.”
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Father showed it to me when I was twelve.”
“Which father?”
He flinched.
“Vance.”
The admission changed him. For the first time, he looked less like a strategist and more like a child who had spent his life trying to earn love from the wrong man.
Claire felt no pity.
Only clarity.
“You helped him.”
“I believed he was protecting the family.”
“You mean protecting you.”
“Yes.”
Daniel said Vance stored original evidence in a hidden courtroom archive. He wanted Daniel to destroy it and escape through the tunnel with Lily as leverage.
Federal agents fitted Daniel with a vest and tracker.
They entered Courtroom Seven at dusk.
The room was dark except for the judge’s bench.
Lily sat in the witness chair with her hands tied.
Vance stood behind her.
He held no gun.
He held a detonator.
Explosives had been wired beneath the courtroom floor.
Daniel walked toward him.
“Let her go.”
Vance smiled. “You always were sentimental at the wrong time.”
“You said she was useful.”
“She was. Now she is evidence.”
Claire listened from a nearby surveillance room.
Daniel asked what Vance wanted.
“The black ledger. The blue ledger. Hale’s files. Every copy.”
“That is impossible.”
“Then we all become a tragedy.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
She stared back at him with terror and anger.
“Did you steal me?” she asked.
Vance laughed.
Daniel said nothing.
Lily repeated, “Did you?”
“Yes.”
The word echoed through the courtroom.
Claire closed her eyes.
Daniel continued.
“I told myself I saved you. I did not. I stole you because I wanted Claire tied to me and Vance wanted your grandfather silent.”
Vance’s face hardened. “Stop talking.”
Daniel ignored him.
“I hurt Claire. I killed her pregnancy. I kept Anna imprisoned. I helped bury your mother’s case.”
Lily began crying.
Daniel looked toward the hidden camera.
He knew Claire was listening.
“I am guilty.”
Then he lunged at Vance.
The detonator fell.
Lily kicked it beneath the witness stand.
Agents breached the courtroom.
Vance drew a pistol from his robe and fired.
The bullet struck Daniel in the chest.
Daniel fell.
Claire ran in.
Vance grabbed Lily and backed toward the judge’s chambers.
Maya shouted, “The explosives are fake!”
Vance looked down at the detonator.
That hesitation ended him.
Rachel, bleeding but conscious, appeared through the side door and struck him with a metal fire extinguisher.
Vance collapsed.
Lily ran into Claire’s arms.
Daniel lay beneath the seal of the court, struggling to breathe.
He looked at Claire.
“I told the truth.”
“Yes.”
“Does it matter?”
Claire held Lily tighter.
May you like
“It matters to the people you hurt.”
Daniel died before the ambulance arrived.
