Chapter 28 - THE SECOND WEDDING

Claire and Aaron married in the garden behind the former Bennett estate.

The building no longer carried the Bennett name.

It was called Open Door House.

Lily stood between Claire and Rachel before the ceremony.

“You are both walking me down the aisle someday,” she announced.

Rachel said, “We will negotiate.”

Claire laughed.

Maya officiated.

Evelyn sat in the front row beside Julia, who had traveled with a medical aide.

Marcus and Emily sat together.

Not close.

But together.

Claire wore no veil.

She did not want anything covering her face.

When Aaron placed the ring on her hand, she felt fear.

Not because of him.

Because memory lives in the body.

Aaron saw it.

He did not tighten his grip.

He waited.

Claire breathed.

Then she placed the ring on his finger.

They promised honesty, space, accountability, and choice.

No ownership.

At the reception, Lily tapped her glass.

Everyone expected a joke.

Instead, she read a short speech.

“My family started because people lied. It stayed together because people told the truth. I think that is better than being normal.”

Rachel cried first.

Claire followed.

Aaron burned the pasta at the rehearsal dinner but managed the wedding meal through professional help.

The evening ended with music beneath string lights.

Claire stood at the edge of the garden and watched the people she loved.

Julia rolled beside her.

Using her communication tablet, she typed:

YOU LOOK HAPPY.

“I am.”

AFRAID?

“Sometimes.”

GOOD.

Claire smiled. “Good?”

FEAR MEANS YOU ARE PAYING ATTENTION. IT DOES NOT MEAN RUN.

Claire looked at Aaron dancing badly with Lily.

“No. It doesn’t.”

Months later, Claire became pregnant.

The news did not feel purely joyful.

It carried ghosts.

She told Aaron first.

Then Rachel.

Then Lily.

Lily screamed so loudly the neighbors heard.

Claire attended every appointment with anxiety.

Aaron never told her to calm down.

Rachel came when he could not.

Maya reviewed every hospital consent form.

Claire chose a medical center outside the former Bennett network.

At twenty weeks, tests showed a healthy baby.

At thirty-one weeks, complications developed.

Claire began bleeding.

The hospital admitted her.

For one terrible night, she believed history was repeating.

Aaron held one hand.

Rachel held the other.

The doctors stabilized her.

Their son was born early but breathing.

They named him Samuel Aaron Brooks.

For Samuel Price.

For the man who saved Elise.

For every person who chose another life over silence.

Lily held him in the neonatal unit.

“He is tiny.”

“So were you,” Rachel said.

Lily looked at both mothers.

“Did Daniel ever hold me like this?”

Claire answered truthfully.

“Yes.”

“Was he happy?”

“I think he believed he was.”

Lily looked down at Samuel.

“That is sad.”

“Yes.”

But sadness did not own the room.

May you like

Samuel opened his hand around Lily’s finger.

She smiled.
