Chapter 20 - THE PERSON SHE TRUSTED
Daniel named Marcus.
Claire refused to believe him.
Marcus had protected Lily. He had fought Daniel. He had helped uncover the basement and the ledgers.
Daniel laughed softly through the prison phone.
“That is why Vance chose him.”
Claire met Marcus in a federal interview room.
He looked exhausted.
When she placed the photograph on the table, he closed his eyes.
“I did not take it.”
“But you know who did.”
Marcus said nothing.
Claire waited.
Finally, he told her about his daughter.
No one knew she existed.
At nineteen, Marcus had a child with a college girlfriend named Sophie Lane. Charles Bennett paid Sophie to disappear and threatened to destroy Marcus if he followed.
Years later, Vance found Sophie.
He used her and the child to control Marcus.
“Every time I helped you,” Marcus said, “he sent me a new photograph.”
“Why didn’t you tell us?”
“Because he said he would kill them.”
“Where are they?”
“I don’t know.”
Marcus admitted giving Vance school security schedules and details about Maya’s filings.
But he denied participating in violence.
Maya believed part of his story.
Not all.
Federal agents traced a recent message to an abandoned amusement park outside the city.
Sophie and her daughter were found locked inside an underground maintenance room.
Alive.
Vance had already left.
Marcus collapsed when he saw them.
His daughter, Emily, was sixteen.
She did not embrace him.
He did not ask her to.
The reunion was painful and incomplete, but it broke Vance’s hold.
Marcus agreed to testify.
The prosecution now had Daniel, Marcus, Evelyn, Hale, Anna, Rachel, and Claire.
Vance had no allies left.
Still, he remained missing.
Then Maya received a sealed court notice.
The judge assigned to Daniel’s case had ordered Lily brought to chambers for a private child-welfare interview.
The order looked valid.
Maya called the court.
No interview had been scheduled.
A transport team was already on the way to Lily’s school.
Claire and Rachel raced there with federal agents.
They arrived as two men wearing court security uniforms led Lily toward a van.
Rachel shouted.
One man drew a gun.
Claire ran anyway.
The second man grabbed Lily and pulled her behind the van.
A shot fired.
The first man fell.
The shooter was Marcus.
He stood across the parking lot with a licensed rifle taken from the security office.
The second kidnapper pushed Lily into the van.
Rachel reached the door before it closed.
She held on as the vehicle accelerated.
Claire jumped into an agent’s SUV.
The chase tore through downtown traffic.
The van entered an underground courthouse garage.
By the time agents followed, it was empty.
A maintenance door stood open.
Beyond it was an old tunnel beneath the courthouse.
