Chapter 16 - THE BASEMENT

Claire knew the Bennett house had a basement.
She did not know it had a locked room.
Lily sent another message before the tablet went offline.
There is a woman crying downstairs.
Maya called federal law enforcement.
They declined to intervene without evidence of an immediate threat.
Local police performed a welfare check. Daniel met them at the front door, showed them the custody order, and claimed Lily had invented the story after “coaching” from Claire and Rachel.
The officers left.
Marcus knew a way into the house.
As teenagers, he and Daniel had used an old wine-delivery tunnel connecting the carriage house to the basement. Their father sealed the entrance after catching them.
Marcus believed the inner passage still existed.
At midnight, Claire, Rachel, Marcus, and Maya entered the carriage house through a rear window. Evelyn stayed with an investigative journalist Maya trusted.
The sealed tunnel door had been hidden behind storage shelves.
Marcus removed the wall panel.
Cold air came through.
They crawled nearly fifty feet through darkness.
At the basement end, they heard a woman sobbing.
Marcus forced the door.
The room beyond was not a wine cellar.
It was a medical suite.
A hospital bed stood beneath fluorescent lights. Cabinets held restraints, sedatives, and blank commitment forms signed by Dr. Hale.
A woman lay strapped to the bed.
Claire recognized her from one of Daniel’s photographs.
Anna Reed.
A former Bennett Capital accountant who disappeared three years earlier after accusing the company of laundering hospital funds.
Anna was alive.
Barely.
She told them Daniel kept her there because she knew where Charles Bennett stored the original corridor records.
“He moved me whenever investigators came,” she whispered. “He said no one searches a family home.”
Maya photographed everything.
Then the basement lights came on.
Daniel stood at the top of the stairs holding Lily by the shoulder.
Lily looked terrified.
Daniel held a gun in his other hand.
“Always dramatic, Claire.”
Maya stepped forward. “Federal agents are coming.”
“No, they are not.”
He held up a signal jammer.
Marcus moved slightly to the left.
Daniel aimed at him. “Do not.”
Rachel looked at Lily. “Sweetheart, come here.”
Daniel’s grip tightened.
“You do not speak to my daughter.”
“She is not yours,” Rachel said.
Daniel smiled. “Legally, she is.”
Claire saw movement behind him.
Evelyn.
She had followed them.
Daniel did not know.
His mother reached for the gun cabinet on the wall.
Claire kept his attention.
“Why Anna?”
“She stole from the company.”
“You stole her life.”
“She signed the commitment order.”
“While drugged.”
“Details.”
Evelyn opened the cabinet.
Daniel heard the click.
He turned.
Lily bit his hand.
The gun fired.
The bullet struck the ceiling.
Marcus tackled him.
Claire pulled Lily away while Rachel released Anna’s restraints.
Daniel fought like a cornered animal. He drove Marcus into the wall and reached for the fallen gun.
Evelyn picked it up first.
She aimed at her son.
“Stop.”
Daniel froze.
“You will not shoot me,” he said.
Evelyn’s hands shook.
“No,” she whispered. “But I will tell them where your father buried the children.”
Everyone went silent.
Daniel’s face emptied.
Claire asked, “What children?”
May you like
Evelyn looked toward the far wall.
“Behind the concrete.”
