Chapter 25 - THE FIRST WIFE
Daniel had married a woman named Julia Mercer two years before Claire.
The marriage took place in Nevada under a shortened version of his name.
No divorce had ever been filed.
Claire’s marriage was legally invalid.
Julia disappeared six months after Daniel met Claire.
Vance claimed she was alive.
He offered the location in exchange for transfer to a safer prison.
Prosecutors refused to negotiate without proof.
Vance gave them a bank account number.
The account paid for a long-term care residence in Vermont.
Julia Mercer lived there under the name Jane Miller.
Claire traveled with Maya and federal agents.
Julia was forty-one and used a wheelchair. A stroke had affected her speech.
She recognized Daniel’s photograph and began shaking.
Through an assisted communication device, she told her story.
Daniel married her because she inherited voting shares in a regional hospital network. When she discovered the corridor, he drugged her and staged an overdose.
She survived with brain damage.
Vance hid her in the care facility to preserve leverage over Daniel.
Julia had sent the envelope.
A nurse helped her after seeing television coverage of Claire.
The photograph of Daniel kissing a woman showed him meeting Julia’s sister, not a mistress. The sister had spent years searching.
Julia had copied Lily’s death certificate and Daniel’s financial transfer before the attack.
She waited until she believed Claire could act.
Claire sat beside her bed.
“Why me?”
Julia typed slowly.
BECAUSE YOU LOOKED LIKE I DID BEFORE I KNEW.
The sentence stayed with Claire.
Julia’s testimony opened a bigamy and attempted murder case against Daniel’s estate, but more importantly it revealed another archive.
Daniel had placed recordings in a cloud account that released only if Vance died or was transferred.
The files included conversations with judges, executives, and political donors.
Dozens of investigations followed.
Vance lost every remaining protection.
He was moved to a maximum-security facility.
Before transfer, he attempted suicide.
He survived.
The system he built would not allow him to escape through death.
Julia moved to a rehabilitation center funded by the victim trust.
Claire visited regularly.
They were not friends at first.
They were two women connected by the same lie.
Over time, they shared details no one else understood.
The way Daniel tilted his head before denying something.
The way he used gifts after cruelty.
The way he made women feel chosen while cataloging their weaknesses.
One afternoon, Julia typed:
DID HE EVER LOVE ANYONE?
Claire thought of Daniel in Courtroom Seven, confessing before Vance shot him.
“I don’t know.”
Julia typed again.
DOES IT MATTER?
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
That evening, Claire returned home to find Rachel making dinner and Lily doing homework at the kitchen counter.
The scene was ordinary.
That was its beauty.
Lily looked up.
“Mom Claire, can Mom Rachel sleep over? We have the school project tomorrow.”
Rachel laughed. “She means she wants both of us to build the volcano.”
Claire put down her bag.
“Of course.”
