Chapter 11 - The Debt That Bought Ethan

Ethan was David’s brother.

The realization hit me like a physical blow.

All those years, he had smiled at family dinners, played with Lily, slept beside me — and the whole time he had been waiting. Planning. Using me to get close to the only thing his brother had left behind that was worth anything.

Lily.

And her inheritance.

Patricia was still talking, but I could barely hear her. My mind was racing through every memory, every lie, every “I’m just trying to help” moment.

The USB drive sat on the table between us like a bomb.

“What’s on it?” I asked.

Patricia had already plugged it into her laptop.

“Financial records,” she said. “Emails between Ethan and someone named Marcus Hale — probably a fake name. They were moving money through shell companies. And there are messages about Lily’s trust. Ethan was trying to access it even before David died.”

I felt sick.

“He killed his own brother,” I whispered.

“We don’t know that,” Patricia said carefully. “But we know he benefited. And we know he’s been trying to finish what he started.”

I stood up. “I need to get Lily. Now.”

Rachel was already standing. “I’ll come with you.”

We drove to the school in silence. When we pulled up, Lily was waiting by the front doors with her teacher, looking small and worried.

The second she saw me, she ran.

I caught her and held her tight.

“Mom? What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” I said. “Everything’s going to be okay. But we need to go somewhere safe right now.”

She didn’t argue. She just took my hand and got in the car.

That night, back at Rachel’s, we played the recording from the USB for Patricia over the phone.

Ethan’s voice was clear.

“…once the old man is out of the way, the girl gets everything. I just need to stay close. Megan won’t suspect anything. She trusts me.”

Another voice — Marcus — laughed.

“And if she gets in the way?”

“Then we make sure she doesn’t. Same way we handled David.”

I turned the recording off.

Rachel had gone pale.

Patricia’s voice came through the speaker, steady and cold.

“We have enough,” she said. “I’m calling Detective Ramirez. Ethan and Elena are going to be arrested tonight.”

I looked at Lily, who was sitting on the couch with her drawing pad, pretending not to listen.

She had been through enough.

“It’s almost over,” I told her.

She looked up at me.

“Promise?”
