Chapter 12 - The Night They Broke In

The police moved fast.
By nine o’clock that night, Detective Ramirez called.
“We have Ethan in custody,” she said. “Elena too. They were at the house trying to get into the safe. We caught them with tools and gloves. They’re not going anywhere tonight.”
I closed my eyes in relief.
“Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me yet,” Ramirez said. “They’re lawyering up. But with the recording, the USB, and them breaking into the house, we have a strong case. I need you and Lily to come in tomorrow for formal statements.”
“We’ll be there.”
After the call, I sat on the couch with Lily and Rachel. For the first time in weeks, the house felt quiet in a good way.
Lily leaned against me.
“Is it really over?” she asked.
“Almost,” I said. “We still have to go to court. But they can’t hurt us anymore.”
She was quiet for a long moment.
“Mom… do you think Dad knew? About Ethan?”
I thought about the letter in the safety deposit box.
“I think he suspected something,” I said. “And he tried to protect us the only way he could.”
Lily nodded. “I’m glad we have the bracelet. And the letter.”
“Me too.”
That night, I slept better than I had in months.
But at three in the morning, my phone rang.
It was the alarm company.
Motion detected at the house.
I sat up fast.
Rachel appeared in the doorway, already dressed.
“Ethan’s in jail,” she said. “It can’t be him.”
I grabbed my phone and called Ramirez.
“Someone’s at the house,” I said. “The alarm just went off.”
“Stay where you are,” Ramirez ordered. “I’m sending units now. Do not go there.”
We waited.
Twenty minutes later, Ramirez called back.
“The house is clear,” she said. “But someone broke in. They went straight to Lily’s room and the safe. They didn’t take anything — probably because the bracelet wasn’t there. But they left a message.”
My stomach dropped.
“What message?”
Ramirez was quiet for a second.
“On the wall in Lily’s room. In red paint. It says: ‘This isn’t over.’”
I looked at my daughter, sleeping peacefully in the guest room.

They were still coming for us.
Even from jail.
