Chapter 10 - Elena’s Real Name

Six months later, the divorce was final.
Ethan had signed everything without a fight once he realized how much evidence I had. Rachel had disappeared — probably to another state, another con. The restraining order was permanent.
Lily and I had moved into a smaller house closer to her school. It didn’t have a guest room. We didn’t need one.
One Saturday morning, we were sitting on the floor of her new bedroom, putting together a bookshelf she had picked out herself.
She was humming under her breath — something she hadn’t done in months.
“Mom?” she said suddenly.
“Yeah?”
“Do you think he ever loved us? Even a little?”
I put down the screwdriver and looked at her.
“I think he loved the idea of what we could give him,” I said honestly. “But that’s not the same as loving us. Real love doesn’t lie. It doesn’t use children. And it doesn’t try to steal what isn’t theirs.”
Lily thought about that.
Then she nodded.
“I’m glad we have each other,” she said.
I reached over and squeezed her hand.
“Me too, baby. Me too.”
Later that afternoon, we went to the park. Lily ran ahead on the path while I walked behind her, watching the way her hair caught the sunlight.
She looked back once and waved.
I waved back.
We were not the same people we had been six months ago.
We were quieter in some ways.
Stronger in others.
But we were together.
And we were safe.
Ethan and Rachel had tried to take everything — our trust, our home, Lily’s inheritance, even her sense of safety.
They had failed.
Because I had stopped being the woman who stayed quiet.
And Lily had learned that she never had to carry secrets alone again.
As we walked home that evening, hand in hand, I realized something simple but true.
We didn’t need a big house or a fake grandmother or a man who pretended to love us.
We just needed this.
Each other.
And the freedom to finally live without lies.

That was more than enough.
That was everything.
