Chapter 17 - The Hearing

The final hearing was short.

The judge reviewed the evidence one last time, then looked at Lily and me.

“Custody is awarded solely to the mother,” she said. “The trust remains under the mother’s control until Lily reaches the age of majority. The bracelet is returned to Lily as her sole property. Ethan Hale is to have no contact with either party, directly or indirectly, for the rest of his sentence and thereafter.”

She paused.

“I hope you both find peace,” she said. “You’ve earned it.”

Outside the courthouse, Lily and I stood in the sunlight.

Rachel took our picture — just the two of us, holding hands, smiling for the first time in what felt like forever.

That night, we had dinner at Rachel’s. Lily laughed at something on TV. Rachel made her favorite dessert. I watched them and felt something I hadn’t felt in months.

Hope.

After Lily went to bed, Rachel and I sat on the porch.

“What now?” she asked.

I looked up at the stars.

“Now we sell the old house. We find a new one. Somewhere with a yard and room for a dog. Somewhere Lily can grow up without looking over her shoulder.”

Rachel smiled. “And you?”

I thought about it.

“I want to go back to work. Maybe start something of my own. Something that’s just mine. And I want to be the kind of mother Lily deserves. The kind who fights for her. Who protects her. Who lets her be a kid again.”

Rachel reached over and squeezed my hand.

“You already are that mother,” she said.

I hoped she was right.
