Chapter 8 - The Night the Performance Ended

The restraining order was granted within forty-eight hours.

Ethan and Rachel were served at the apartment they had been sharing. According to the process server, Rachel had thrown a shoe at the door when she realized what the papers were.

I didn’t care.

What mattered was that Lily and I could breathe again.

That weekend, I finally told Lily the full truth — carefully, in pieces she could handle.

I told her that Doris had never been sick. That the confusion had been an act to make us feel sorry for her. That Ethan had brought her into our home to try to take things that belonged to Lily.

She listened quietly, then asked one question.

“Was any of it real? The way she sometimes smiled at me?”

I thought about it.

“No,” I said honestly. “I don’t think so. Some people are very good at pretending to be kind when they want something.”

Lily nodded slowly.

“I’m glad she’s gone,” she said. “Even if she made good cookies.”

I smiled for the first time in days.

“Me too.”

That night, after Lily fell asleep, I sat at the kitchen table with the bracelet box in front of me. I opened it and ran my fingers over the gold.

Ethan had wanted this.

Rachel had wanted this.

They had been willing to hurt an eleven-year-old to get it.

I closed the box and put it back in the safe.

They had failed.

And I was just getting started.
