Chapter 3 - The Lie That Lived in Our House

That night, Ethan came home late.

He walked in carrying the same pharmacy bag like a prop, the same tired expression he had been wearing for weeks. Doris — or whatever her real name was — was already in the guest room with the door closed.

I was sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of tea I hadn’t touched.

He stopped when he saw me.

“Megan,” he started, voice low. “What you saw today… it’s complicated.”

I didn’t raise my voice.

“Her name isn’t Doris, is it?”

He froze.

I continued, calm as if I were charting a patient’s vitals.

“She doesn’t need a walker. She doesn’t get confused. She doesn’t ask Lily the same question three times because she forgot. She does it because she’s acting.”

Ethan ran a hand over his face.

“It’s not what you think.”

“Then tell me what it is,” I said. “Because right now, it looks like you moved your mistress into our house, made her pretend to be your sick mother, and tried to pressure me into signing over power of attorney.”

He didn’t deny it.

That silence told me everything.

From the hallway, I heard the guest room door open slightly. The woman — the fake Doris — was listening.

I raised my voice just enough for her to hear.

“You have until tomorrow morning to get your things and leave this house. Both of you.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“You’re overreacting. This is about Lily’s trust, isn’t it? You think I’m trying to steal from my own stepdaughter—”

“I think you brought a stranger into our home and taught her how to manipulate my child,” I said. “And I think you wanted access to money that doesn’t belong to you.”

He took a step closer.

“Megan, be reasonable. We can talk about this like adults.”

I stood up.

“The adults are done talking. Pack your bags. And tell your friend in the guest room that if she ever comes near Lily again, I will not be reasonable.”

Ethan stared at me for a long moment.

Then he turned and walked down the hallway without another word.

I sat back down at the table and wrapped my hands around the cold tea.

My heart was racing, but my mind was clear.
