Chapter 7 - I Stopped Being Quiet

Ethan tried to come back three days later.
He showed up with flowers and a rehearsed speech about “misunderstandings” and “working through this for Lily’s sake.”
I didn’t open the door.
I spoke through the new locks.
“You have no right to be here,” I said. “If you come near this house again, I’ll call the police.”
He tried to argue. Tried to say I was overreacting. Tried to guilt me about “family.”
I cut him off.
“Lily saw you with Rachel at the mall. She saw the way you touched her. She heard the lies Doris — Rachel — told her. You used my child to get to money that isn’t yours. There is no coming back from that.”
He was quiet for a long moment.
Then his voice changed.
“You’re going to regret this, Megan. I know things about you. About Lily’s father’s family. I can make this ugly.”
I almost laughed.
“You already made it ugly,” I said. “Now I’m just cleaning it up.”
I closed the door.
That night, I met with my lawyer in person. We filed for divorce and requested a restraining order. We also started the process of removing Ethan’s name from anything connected to Lily’s trust.
The lawyer looked at me across his desk.
“Most people in your position would be emotional right now,” he said. “You’re very calm.”
I met his eyes.
“I have an eleven-year-old who has been lied to and used for weeks. She needs me steady. So that’s what I’m going to be.”
He nodded once, like he understood.
When I got home, Lily was waiting up.
“Did he come back?” she asked.
“Yes,” I said. “But he’s not coming back again.”
She studied me.
“Are we safe now?”
I pulled her into a hug.
May you like
“We’re getting there,” I said. “And we’re going to stay that way.”
For the first time since the mall, she hugged me back without hesitation.
