Chapter 11 - The Roots We Plant

|
The morning sun stretched lazily across the lush, expansive gardens of the Saint Claire Medical Center. Dew clung to the vibrant green blades of grass, sparkling like tiny diamonds in the early light. True to his word, eight-year-old Arthur was already on his knees in the dirt, wearing a pair of oversized gardening gloves. He held a small, silver trowel, digging with an intense, adorable concentration.
Raymond sat nearby on a wrought-iron bench, his silver cane resting against his knee. He watched the boy with a soft, affectionate smile, the deep wrinkles around his eyes crinkling with quiet joy. Emily stood beside her uncle, holding a thermos of hot coffee, breathing in the crisp, fresh morning air. Today was supposed to be a day of rest, a day to simply bask in the triumph of the foundation’s tenth anniversary.
"You have to make the hole deep enough, Arthur," Raymond instructed gently, his voice raspy but full of warmth. "An oak tree needs a strong foundation. If the roots don't run deep, the first major storm will knock it right over."
"I know, Uncle Raymond," Arthur replied, panting slightly as he scooped out another pile of rich, dark soil. "I want this tree to be taller than the hospital one day. I want it to touch the clouds."
Emily chuckled, stepping forward to hand Arthur the small oak sapling.
"It will take a very long time for it to get that big, sweetheart," Emily said softly. "But if we take care of it, and protect it, it will outlast all of us. It will provide shade for people we haven't even met yet."
As Arthur carefully placed the sapling into the earth and began to pack the dirt around its fragile base, Emily’s cell phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, her serene expression faltering slightly as she read the caller ID. It was Sarah, the Chief Financial Officer of the foundation. Sarah never called this early unless it was an absolute emergency.
"I need to take this," Emily murmured, stepping away from the garden path. She swiped the screen. "Sarah? Is everything alright?"
"Emily, I am so sorry to interrupt your morning," Sarah’s voice trembled slightly with a mix of excitement and deep concern. "But you need to come up to the executive office right now. We just received a wire transfer into the foundation’s primary expansion account. It’s a massive anonymous donation."

"How massive?" Emily asked, her brow furrowing.
"Fifty million dollars," Sarah breathed. "But Emily... there's a contingency clause attached to the funds, and the shell company making the transfer has a very troubling origin."
