Chapter 20 - The Backlash

|
The morning after the charity gala, the city awoke to an absolute media firestorm. The front pages of every major newspaper and local news broadcast featured exactly the same story: Emily Saint Claire’s dramatic, public rejection of Richard Sterling’s toxic fifty-million-dollar donation.
But Richard was a wounded, dangerous animal, and he possessed vast financial resources to fight back. By noon, his high-priced public relations firm had launched a vicious, calculated smear campaign against Emily.
Tabloid websites began running sponsored articles questioning Emily’s mental stability and leadership capabilities. They painted her as a bitter, vindictive ex-wife who was willing to let sick children suffer simply to settle a decade-old personal grudge against her former husband.
Emily walked through the hospital corridors, feeling the heavy, anxious stares of some of the newer staff members who didn't know her history. She kept her head held high, her posture impeccable, but internally, the relentless barrage of media attacks was beginning to take a toll.
She retreated to the quiet sanctuary of the hospital’s private chapel, sitting in the back pew, rubbing her temples to ward off a looming migraine.
The heavy wooden doors creaked open, and Nurse Jenkins walked in, sitting quietly beside Emily.
"The switchboard has been ringing off the hook all morning," Nurse Jenkins reported gently. "Some donors are panicking because of the articles Richard paid to have published. They are threatening to pull their pledges from last night."
Emily let out a long, shuddering sigh, resting her face in her hands.
"He is trying to burn the hospital down just because I wouldn't hand him the keys," Emily whispered, the sheer exhaustion evident in her voice. "I thought I was strong enough to protect this place, Jenkins. But maybe my past with him is too much of a liability."

Nurse Jenkins reached out, placing a warm, highly experienced hand over Emily’s.
"Emily, you listen to me," the older nurse said fiercely, her eyes blazing with unwavering loyalty. "Before you took over, this hospital was a corrupt, soulless corporation. You gave it a heart. You gave us our dignity back. We don't care what some paid tabloid says. Every single doctor, nurse, and janitor in this building stands entirely with you. You are our Chairman. Now, wipe your face, and let's go show that arrogant bastard what a real fight looks like."
