Chapter 17 - Gathering the Allies

Emily knew that possessing the truth was not enough; she needed an undeniable witness. She needed someone inside Vanguard who could corroborate the documents and testify to Richard Sterling’s direct involvement in the predatory pricing scheme.

Through a network of discreet medical contacts, Dr. Aris managed to locate a deeply disillusioned senior research scientist at Vanguard, a woman named Dr. Sarah Evans.

Emily arranged a highly confidential meeting at a small, dimly lit coffee shop on the outskirts of the city, far away from the bustling hospital campus. The rain poured outside, drumming heavily against the café windows as Emily sat in a corner booth, waiting.

Dr. Evans arrived ten minutes late, looking completely terrified. She clutched a leather satchel to her chest, constantly looking over her shoulder as she slid into the booth across from Emily.

"Thank you for coming, Dr. Evans," Emily said softly, pushing a warm cup of tea toward the nervous woman. "I know how incredibly dangerous this is for you."

"You don't understand how vindictive Richard Sterling is," Dr. Evans whispered, her hands shaking as she wrapped them around the warm mug. "He ruins people who speak out against him. He destroys careers, bankrupts families. I have a daughter in college, Mrs. Saint Claire. I can't afford to be dragged through a massive corporate lawsuit."

"I know exactly how vindictive he is," Emily replied, leaning forward, her gaze intense and empathetic. "Ten years ago, he tried to destroy me. He isolated me, manipulated me, and tried to strip me of everything I loved. But I fought back. And I won."

Dr. Evans looked up, searching Emily’s face for any sign of hesitation. She found only unyielding strength.

"I became a doctor to save children," Dr. Evans said, her voice cracking with raw emotion. "But Vanguard is letting them die because their parents can't afford a thousand-dollar pill that costs us four dollars to manufacture. I can't sleep at night anymore. I can't be a part of this."

Dr. Evans unzipped her leather satchel and pulled out a small, encrypted black flash drive, sliding it slowly across the wooden table.

"This drive contains the internal emails between Richard Sterling and the board of Vanguard," Dr. Evans whispered. "It explicitly details their strategy to monopolize pediatric cancer drugs and deliberately price out low-income hospitals. It is the smoking gun you need."

Emily took the flash drive, her hand covering the doctor's trembling fingers.

"I promise you, Dr. Evans," Emily vowed fiercely. "I will protect you. And we will end this."
