Chapter 14 - The Board's Dilemma

|
By Friday morning, Richard had entirely bypassed Emily and taken his offer directly to the hospital’s Board of Directors. He had sent customized, glossy portfolios to every board member, detailing the massive fifty-million-dollar injection and promising unprecedented financial growth for the network.
The emergency board meeting was the most tense gathering Emily had presided over in a decade. The long glass table was surrounded by fifteen men and women, many of whom were looking at the Vanguard proposal with undisguised greed.
"We have to at least consider the objective benefits," Mr. Harrison, a senior board member, argued, tapping his gold pen against the table. "Fifty million dollars completely covers the construction of the pediatric wing and leaves us with an endowment for research. It is a monumental sum of money, Emily."
"It is dirty money, Thomas," Emily fired back, standing at the head of the table. "Richard Sterling was removed from this very institution for fraud and patient exploitation. Do you truly believe he has suddenly grown a conscience? Vanguard Medical is currently under investigation in three states for predatory pricing on life-saving insulin. If we bind ourselves to him, we become complicit in his extortion."
"But the PR optics," another board member, Mrs. Gable, interjected nervously. "Sterling leaked the offer to the local newspaper this morning. The headlines are already saying that a billionaire philanthropist is offering to save the children's ward. If we formally reject it, we will look petty and vindictive."
Emily placed both her hands flat on the glass table, leaning forward, her eyes locking with every single person in the room until the murmurs fell completely silent.
"Ten years ago, we made a promise to this city," Emily said, her voice ringing with unwavering conviction. "We promised that Saint Claire would never prioritize profit over patients. We promised that integrity would be our only currency. If we accept this money, we sell our soul. We hand the keys of this sanctuary to a man who only knows how to destroy."
"Then how do we fund the wing, Emily?" Harrison challenged. "We are twenty million short."

"I will find the money," Emily promised fiercely. "I will raise it dollar by dollar from people who actually care about healing, not hostile takeovers. But I need this board to stand with me. We vote now. Do we accept Vanguard's poison, or do we stand by our principles?"
The room was heavy with silence, but one by one, hands slowly raised in Emily's favor. The board rejected the offer. But Emily knew the war had only just begun.
