Chapter 18 - The Gala Ambush

|
The Saint Claire Health Foundation’s annual charity gala was the social event of the season. Held in the grand ballroom of the city’s most prestigious hotel, the room was a sea of glittering crystal chandeliers, opulent floral arrangements, and the wealthiest, most influential citizens in the state.
Emily stood near the grand staircase, wearing a breathtaking emerald green evening gown, effortlessly commanding the room as she greeted donors and city officials.
But the atmosphere shifted abruptly when the massive ballroom doors swung open, and Richard Sterling walked in, flanked by two of his corporate lawyers and a photographer from a local tabloid newspaper. He had not been invited, but he had bought a VIP table through a proxy company just to force his way into the event.
Nurse Jenkins, who was standing beside Emily, narrowed her eyes in absolute disgust. "I can have security throw him out onto the street right now, Emily. Just say the word."
"No," Emily said calmly, her eyes locked on Richard as he arrogantly made his way through the crowd, shaking hands and loudly boasting about his philanthropic intentions. "Let him stay. Let him walk right into the spotlight. The higher he climbs, the harder he will fall."
Richard finally reached Emily, flashing a million-dollar, camera-ready smile as his photographer snapped a flurry of pictures.
"Emily, darling," Richard proclaimed loudly, ensuring everyone nearby could hear him. "What a magnificent event. I was incredibly disappointed to hear that your board rejected my fifty-million-dollar donation for the children's wing. But I am a forgiving man. I am here tonight to publicly renew my offer. Let's put the past behind us and save some lives, shall we?"
A hush fell over the immediate crowd. Whispers rippled through the wealthy donors. Richard was trying to corner her, using the social pressure of the gala to paint her as a stubborn, bitter ex-wife holding back progress.
Emily did not flinch. She smiled, a cold, razor-sharp expression that made Richard’s confident facade falter for a fraction of a second.
"Your generosity is certainly unparalleled, Richard," Emily said loudly, her voice dripping with elegant sarcasm. "In fact, I think an offer of this magnitude deserves to be addressed from the main stage. Why don't you join me at the podium for the keynote address in ten minutes?"

Richard looked surprised, but his ego quickly took over. "I would be honored."
He thought he had won. He thought she was surrendering. He had no idea he was walking straight into an execution.
