Chapter 12 - A Ghost in the Ledger

|

Emily walked briskly through the polished, bustling corridors of the executive floor, her heels clicking rhythmically against the marble tiles. The peaceful morning in the garden already felt like a distant memory. She pushed open the heavy glass doors to the finance department and found Sarah pacing frantically behind her desk, a stack of freshly printed financial documents spread out like a chaotic mosaic.

"Show me," Emily commanded calmly, dropping her purse onto the sofa and stepping up to the desk.

Sarah handed her a thick manila folder.

"The transfer cleared our holding accounts at exactly 8:00 AM," Sarah explained, her finger tracing a line of highlighted text on the top page. "Fifty million dollars, earmarked specifically for the new pediatric oncology wing. On the surface, it looks like a miracle. But I ran a trace on the routing numbers to verify the donor for tax compliance. The money came from a holding firm called Vanguard Medical Solutions."

Emily’s blood ran cold. The name felt like a physical blow to her chest. She stared at the bold black letters on the page, her mind racing back to a time of humiliation, deceit, and corporate warfare.

"Vanguard," Emily whispered, her voice tightening. "That's an umbrella corporation. Who is listed as the primary shareholder now?"

"I dug through the offshore registries," Sarah said nervously, pulling up a secondary screen on her computer. "The primary controlling shareholder is Richard Sterling."

Richard. Her former husband, the man who had tried to strip her of her dignity, her inheritance, and her family name ten years ago. The man who had been ousted from the city in absolute disgrace after Emily and Raymond had exposed his rampant embezzlement and cruel manipulations.

"Why would Richard donate fifty million dollars to this foundation?" Emily asked, though she already felt the sinister truth settling into her bones. "He despises everything we stand for."

"Look at the contingency clause on page four," Sarah pointed out.

Emily flipped the pages. Her eyes scanned the legal jargon until she found the specific paragraph. The donation was entirely contingent on Vanguard Medical Solutions being named the exclusive pharmaceutical provider for the entire Saint Claire network for the next twenty years, and Richard Sterling being granted a permanent, voting seat on the Board of Directors.

"He doesn't want to donate to the hospital, Sarah," Emily said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "He wants to buy it. He wants to buy his way back into power, and he is using sick children as his leverage."
