Chapter 2 – The Closet Is Opened

The locks clicked almost simultaneously.

Heavy steel security doors slid across every entrance to the Moretti ballroom.

A dozen armed guards took their positions without a single shouted command.

Three hundred guests looked around in confusion.

Some smiled nervously, assuming Alessandro Moretti was simply protecting his fiancée from an embarrassing interruption.

Those who knew him better remained perfectly still.

Because they understood something everyone else did not.

Alessandro never locked doors to trap innocent people.

He locked them to keep the guilty from escaping.

I tightened my grip around Emma's tiny hand.

She was trembling.

Not from fear.

From the fever that still hadn't completely broken.

"Mama..."

she whispered.

"Are we in trouble?"

I forced a smile I didn't feel.

"No, sweetheart."

I brushed damp curls away from her forehead.

"You just told the truth."

She looked up with innocent confusion.

"Is telling the truth bad?"

The question struck deeper than any accusation.

Before I could answer, Alessandro spoke.

"Nobody leaves."

His voice wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

Every conversation disappeared instantly.

The string quartet lowered their instruments.

Champagne glasses remained suspended halfway to waiting lips.

Even the photographers stopped taking pictures.

The silence felt heavier than the rain pounding against the mansion's enormous windows.

Vanessa recovered first.

She laughed softly, shaking her head as though the entire situation amused her.

"Darling..."

She slipped her hand through Alessandro's arm.

"This has gone far enough."

She looked toward the guests.

"I'm sure everyone understands how creative children can be."

No one answered.

She squeezed his arm tighter.

"We're embarrassing our friends."

Alessandro slowly removed her hand.

Not roughly.

Simply...

Completely.

The tiny gesture carried more weight than a public argument.

For the first time that evening...

A flicker of uncertainty crossed Vanessa's face.

He turned toward the head of security.

"Marco."

A broad-shouldered man in a black suit stepped forward immediately.

"Yes, sir."

"How many security cameras cover Miss Cole's private hallway?"

Marco answered without hesitation.

"Five."

"Were they operating six weeks ago?"

"Twenty-four hours a day."

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"There must be some mistake," she said quickly.

"The cameras in my suite were disconnected during renovations."

Marco frowned.

"No, ma'am."

"They remained operational."

She stared at him.

"You must be confused."

"I installed the temporary system myself."

The room became noticeably quieter.

Several guests exchanged uneasy glances.

Vanessa had expected everyone to defend her.

Instead...

Facts were beginning to speak.

Alessandro looked at Marco again.

"Retrieve the footage."

Marco nodded.

"I'll have it in five minutes."

Vanessa stepped forward so quickly that her chair tipped backward.

"That's impossible."

Every eye shifted toward her.

She realized her mistake immediately.

"I mean..."

"The footage is private."

She laughed awkwardly.

"You can't simply show my bedroom to everyone."

"No."

Alessandro agreed calmly.

"I won't."

He looked toward one of his attorneys standing near the bar.

"Mr. Kaplan."

The silver-haired lawyer approached.

"Yes, Mr. Moretti."

"You'll review the footage privately."

"If it confirms Miss Carter's statement..."

His eyes briefly met mine.

"...you'll report only the relevant facts."

Kaplan nodded once.

"Understood."

I stood frozen.

Miss Carter.

He had never called me by my first name before.

Not because he was cruel.

Because he maintained strict boundaries with every employee.

Yet somehow...

Hearing him acknowledge me as something more than "the maid" made my chest tighten.

Emma tugged gently on my skirt.

"Mama..."

"I'm sleepy."

I picked her up.

Her forehead was burning.

Alessandro noticed immediately.

"She's still sick."

It wasn't a question.

I nodded.

"Just a fever."

He turned toward the family physician attending the gala.

"Dr. Rosen."

An elderly doctor stepped forward.

"Please examine the child."

I instinctively stepped back.

"Sir, that's not necessary—"

"It is."

His tone softened.

"I asked you to bring her today."

"If she's unwell..."

"That becomes my responsibility."

The ballroom fell silent again.

Not because of his words.

Because of what they revealed.

The most powerful man in the room was worrying about a servant's child...

While his own fiancée stood under suspicion.

Vanessa noticed it too.

Jealousy flashed across her face before she hid it behind another practiced smile.

"This is absurd."

She folded her arms.

"We're interrupting our engagement party over a child's fantasy."

Emma looked directly at her.

"It's not pretend."

The little girl spoke with complete sincerity.

"You got mad because the pillow was too squishy."

Several women in the audience frowned.

Children rarely invented details.

Five endless minutes passed.

Then Marco returned carrying a black tablet.

Behind him walked Attorney Kaplan.

Neither looked comfortable.

Kaplan approached Alessandro first.

He spoke quietly enough that only those closest could hear.

"I reviewed the recording."

Alessandro asked only one question.

"Does it exist?"

Kaplan hesitated.

"Yes."

Vanessa gasped.

Kaplan continued carefully.

"The video clearly shows Miss Cole removing a silicone maternity prosthetic from a decorative storage box."

A wave of whispers swept across the ballroom.

"No..." someone muttered.

"My God..."

"It can't be..."

Kaplan wasn't finished.

"She places the prosthetic beneath her dress."

He paused.

"And practices walking in front of the mirror."

The whispers became open conversations.

Several senators quietly stepped away from Vanessa.

Two society women covered their mouths.

A television producer hurried toward the exit...

Only to remember the doors were locked.

Vanessa's face turned white.

"He's lying."

Kaplan looked offended.

"I've practiced law for forty-one years."

"I don't lie for anyone."

She spun toward Marco.

"You manipulated the footage!"

Marco didn't even react.

"The recording is timestamped."

She turned desperately toward Alessandro.

"They're framing me."

He looked at her for a very long time.

Then asked the simplest question of the evening.

"Are you pregnant?"

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

He asked again.

"Yes..."

"Or no."

The room seemed to stop breathing.

Finally...

She whispered,

"...No."

The confession shattered the ballroom.

Someone dropped a silver serving tray.

Crystal shattered across marble.

A woman near the orchestra actually applauded before realizing what she'd done.

Vanessa burst into tears.

"You don't understand!"

"I love you!"

"I only wanted a family."

She reached toward Alessandro.

He stepped back.

The movement broke something inside her.

"You never loved me enough!"

She screamed.

"I waited three years!"

"I watched you choose business over everything!"

"You barely looked at me!"

"I was terrified you'd never marry me!"

Her mascara ran down perfectly sculpted cheeks.

"So I gave you the one thing I knew you couldn't ignore."

"A baby."

The confession echoed through the room.

No one defended her.

No one pitied her.

Even those who had admired Vanessa moments earlier now stared in disbelief.

She had built an engagement...

On a lie.

Alessandro's expression never changed.

"You lied to me."

His voice remained almost unnervingly calm.

"You lied to every person in this room."

Then he looked toward Emma.

His gaze softened.

"But you couldn't fool a three-year-old."

For the first time that evening...

A faint smile touched the corners of his mouth.

Emma smiled back.

"I told Mama pillows don't cry."

A few nervous laughs escaped the guests.

The tension eased...

For exactly three seconds.

Then Marco's earpiece crackled.

His expression hardened.

He looked toward Alessandro.

"Sir..."

"What?"

Marco swallowed.

"The video has a second person in it."

Vanessa froze.

Alessandro narrowed his eyes.

"Who?"

Marco slowly turned the tablet around.

The paused security image showed Vanessa hiding the fake pregnancy belly.

But she wasn't alone.

Standing in the doorway...

Watching everything...

Was a man every newspaper in America believed had died three years earlier.

My husband.

Daniel Carter.

The room disappeared around me.

My knees buckled.

Emma clung tightly to my neck.

"No..."

I whispered.

"That's impossible."

Because I had buried Daniel myself.

May you like

Or at least...

I believed I had.
