Chapter 19 – The Woman Behind Every Lie

Every television in the federal detention center carried the same live broadcast.
Reporters shouted over one another.
Camera flashes lit the stage inside Moretti International Headquarters.
The woman who had introduced herself as Caterina Moretti stood calmly behind the podium.
She looked nothing like the elegant fiancée the world had known as Vanessa Cole.
Gone were the soft pastel dresses and carefully crafted innocence.
She now wore a sharply tailored black suit.
Her dark hair was pulled back.
No diamonds.
No engagement ring.
No tears.
Only absolute confidence.
She smiled.
"Good afternoon."
"My name is Caterina Moretti."
"For twenty-seven years..."
"I have waited for this moment."
Every person in the detention center watched in stunned silence.
Alessandro never blinked.
His voice remained steady.
"Increase the volume."
The broadcast continued.
"The world believes Alessandro Moretti built this empire."
She paused.
"The truth is..."
"...this empire was stolen from my father."
Murmurs spread through the press room.
"My father loved only one thing."
"Our family."
She lowered her eyes.
"After my disappearance..."
"...he stopped living."
Alessandro whispered,
"My father searched for you."
No one heard except Marco.
Back on the screen, Caterina continued.
"For decades, men made decisions for our family."
"They lied."
"They murdered."
"They betrayed."
"And today..."
"I reclaim what belongs to me."
A reporter raised his hand.
"Miss Moretti, are you admitting responsibility for last night's engagement scandal?"
She smiled.
"I created an illusion."
"I never created a crime."
Inside the detention center, Ashcroft laughed bitterly.
"Listen carefully."
"She's choosing every word."
Alessandro looked at him.
"What does she want?"
"Not your money."
"Not your company."
"She wants you to hate yourself."
Another reporter shouted,
"Did you fake the pregnancy?"
Caterina answered without hesitation.
"Yes."
The room exploded.
She waited patiently.
"I lied about carrying a child."
"I lied about loving Alessandro."
"I lied about my name."
"But..."
Her expression hardened.
"I never lied about the corruption inside this empire."
The stock market reacted instantly.
Moretti International shares surged.
Investors believed the company had found a new leader.
Judge Whitmore frowned.
"How?"
Marco answered.
"She's controlling the narrative."
"She exposed herself before anyone else could."
"To the public..."
"She looks like the whistleblower."
Not the criminal.
Then Caterina did something no one expected.
She looked directly into the nearest television camera.
"Alessandro..."
"If you're watching..."
"I never wanted your life."
"I wanted your attention."
The detention center became silent again.
"You spent your entire life chasing ghosts."
"So did I."
She smiled sadly.
"We were both children..."
"...raised by the wrong people."
Alessandro's expression didn't change.
But I noticed his hands.
He had unconsciously clenched them into fists.
The next question came from a financial journalist.
"Who murdered Antonio Moretti?"
Caterina became quiet.
For several long seconds...
She said nothing.
Finally...
She answered.
"I don't know."
Ashcroft burst into laughter.
"She's lying."
The FBI agents looked at him.
"She knows exactly who ordered it."
At that moment, an FBI analyst rushed into the interrogation room.
"Director!"
"What is it?"
"We've completed the facial reconstruction from Daniel Carter's hidden files."
"So?"
"It wasn't only Victor."
The analyst placed several photographs across the table.
Old surveillance images.
Financial meetings.
Private dinners.
One face appeared again...
And again...
And again.
Not Richard Ashcroft.
Not Victor Moretti.
Not Luca.
One woman.
Always standing in the background.
Watching.
Listening.
Never speaking.
Judge Whitmore adjusted her glasses.
"I know her."
"Who is she?"
"Margaret Ellis."
Everyone frowned.
"The family housekeeper."
My heart stopped.
Housekeeper.
Like me.
Judge Whitmore continued.
"She worked for the Moretti family for thirty-four years."
"She disappeared the week Antonio died."
Ashcroft nodded slowly.
"Not disappeared."
"Promoted."
Marco frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Ashcroft leaned forward.
"Margaret Ellis..."
"...was Caterina's nanny."
Silence.
"When Victor hid the little girl..."
"Margaret went with her."
The pieces suddenly began falling into place.
Caterina hadn't survived alone.
She had been raised.
Protected.
Educated.
Prepared.
For decades.
Another analyst entered.
"Sir..."
"We've identified Margaret Ellis."
"Where is she?"
The analyst looked uncomfortable.
"That's the problem."
"What problem?"
"There is no Margaret Ellis."
Everyone stared.
"The identity was fake."
"Completely fabricated."
"No birth certificate."
"No passport."
"No fingerprints before 1988."
Judge Whitmore whispered,
"She never existed."
Ashcroft smiled faintly.
"Now you're finally asking the right questions."
Alessandro stepped closer.
"Who is she?"
Ashcroft looked directly at him.
"The only person your father ever trusted more than Victor."
"And?"
Ashcroft lowered his voice.
"She wasn't the nanny."
"She was..."
Before he could finish—
Three deafening gunshots echoed through the detention center.
BANG!
BANG!
BANG!
FBI agents instantly drew their weapons.
The lights flickered.
Alarms screamed.
"Protect the prisoner!"
someone shouted.
Too late.
Ashcroft slumped sideways in his chair.
Blood spread across his prison uniform.
A sniper's bullet had shattered the reinforced window.
The second had struck the wall.
The third...
Had found his heart.
Marco rushed toward him.
"A medic!"
Ashcroft struggled to breathe.
He grabbed Alessandro's sleeve with surprising strength.
His lips trembled.
"You still..."
"...don't see..."
Alessandro leaned closer.
"See what?"
Ashcroft coughed blood.
Then forced out his final words.
"The woman..."
"...who raised..."
"...Caterina..."
"...was..."
His grip loosened.
His eyes became still.
Richard Ashcroft died before he could finish the sentence.
The sniper was gone.
The only clue left behind was a brass shell casing recovered from the rooftop across the street.
Etched into the metal were two words.
Project Legacy.
Marco slowly picked it up.
His expression darkened.
He looked at Alessandro.
"Sir..."
"I've heard that name before."
"Where?"
Marco swallowed.
"It wasn't in Daniel Carter's files."
May you like
"It was..."
"...in your father's personal diary."
