Chapter 5 – The Waterfront Conspiracy

The room fell into a silence so profound that even the steady rhythm of rain against the hospital windows seemed deafening.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Emma's small hand remained wrapped around my finger.

She had no idea that one sentence—one impossible sentence—had just shattered every certainty I had clung to for the past three years.

"Emma isn't my biological daughter... but she has Moretti blood."

I looked at Alessandro.

He wasn't looking at me.

He was staring at the email as though it were a coded message from another lifetime.

Finally, he spoke.

"Who else has access to my family's DNA records?"

The question wasn't directed at me.

It was directed at Dr. Leonard Weiss.

The elderly physician hesitated.

"Only authorized personnel."

"Names."

"Your father before his death."

"Your legal counsel."

"The laboratory director."

"And..."

He swallowed.

"Miss Vanessa Cole."

Every head turned.

"What?"

Dr. Weiss nodded slowly.

"She joined the laboratory's board eighteen months ago after the engagement."

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

"I never approved that."

"The paperwork carried your digital authorization."

Marco immediately answered.

"Forged."

Twenty-Seven Years Earlier

The Moretti family had quietly funded one of the country's most advanced genetic research facilities.

Publicly...

It specialized in hereditary diseases.

Privately...

It stored the DNA profiles of every direct Moretti heir.

The reason was simple.

For generations, enemies had attempted to infiltrate the family through false inheritance claims.

The laboratory existed to protect the bloodline.

Only four people knew where the master database was kept.

Now...

Someone had used that database as a weapon.

I looked down at Emma.

Her soft curls brushed against my arm.

She looked exactly as she always had.

Nothing had changed.

Except suddenly...

Everyone in the room looked at her differently.

Not as a maid's daughter.

But as a mystery.

"Mama?"

Emma whispered.

"Why are they staring?"

I forced a smile.

"Because you're very brave."

She accepted the answer with the unquestioning faith only children possess.

Alessandro turned toward Marco.

"I want every file connected to the laboratory."

"Especially anything involving Emma Carter."

Marco nodded.

"I'm already inside the archive."

His fingers danced across the encrypted tablet.

Then...

He frowned.

"Someone's deleting files."

"What?"

"Remote access."

"Can you stop it?"

"I'm trying."

Lines of code raced across the screen.

Folders disappeared one after another.

Patient records.

Research logs.

DNA reports.

Gone.

Whoever was behind the attack wasn't simply hiding evidence.

They were erasing history.

"Disconnect the servers," Alessandro ordered.

Marco shook his head.

"Too late."

Then...

One file survived.

Only one.

Its title flashed across the monitor.

PROJECT HORIZON

"Open it."

The file required biometric authorization.

Alessandro placed his thumb against the scanner.

Access granted.

The first page appeared.

Every face in the room changed.

The project wasn't about medicine.

It was about inheritance.

For decades, several powerful New York families—including the Morettis, Coles, and Ashfords—had secretly funded research capable of verifying biological lineage with absolute certainty.

But buried deeper inside the documents...

Was something far darker.

Children.

Dozens of them.

Each assigned a number instead of a name.

DNA samples.

Medical evaluations.

Psychological reports.

One page caught my eye.

Subject 27

Female.

Born: April 12.

Blood Type: O Positive.

Guardian: Amelia Carter.

I stopped breathing.

April 12.

Emma's birthday.

"No..."

I whispered.

"My daughter..."

My hands trembled so violently I nearly dropped the tablet.

Emma wasn't listed as Emma Carter.

She was...

Subject 27.

Dr. Weiss looked horrified.

"I've never seen this project."

Kaplan turned another page.

Funding source:

Harborline Construction Redevelopment Fund

The same company where Daniel had supposedly died.

The same company owned by Vanessa's father.

The same company that no longer existed.

Nothing about Daniel's accident had been random.

Marco suddenly interrupted.

"There's surveillance footage attached."

Alessandro nodded.

"Play it."

The video opened.

Its timestamp read:

Three years earlier.

A laboratory corridor.

Daniel stood arguing with two men in suits.

The audio crackled before becoming clear.

"You can't use children as leverage!"

Daniel shouted.

One of the men answered calmly.

"They're not children."

"They're insurance."

Daniel slammed both hands onto the table.

"You stole blood samples from newborns."

"You forged medical records."

"You've been manipulating inheritance tests for years."

The second man smiled.

"No jury will believe a construction foreman."

Daniel pulled a flash drive from his pocket.

"I copied everything."

"I'm going to the FBI."

The room went silent.

One of the suited men slowly reached for his phone.

Daniel looked directly into the security camera.

"If anything happens to me..."

"...tell Amelia I never stopped fighting."

The recording ended.

Tears blurred my vision.

He hadn't abandoned us.

He'd been trying to protect us.

All this time...

I had believed he died in an accident.

Instead...

He had uncovered something monstrous.

"What happened after that?"

I whispered.

Marco searched further.

"No footage."

"It was deleted."

Another notification appeared.

Marco's face turned pale.

"Sir."

"What now?"

"The flash drive."

"What about it?"

"It was never recovered."

The room became still again.

Daniel had copied the evidence.

If no one found the drive...

Then somewhere...

It still existed.

Emma suddenly tugged on my sleeve.

"Mama?"

"Yes?"

She smiled innocently.

"I know where Daddy hid the shiny stick."

Every adult in the room froze.

"What?"

"He said it was our pirate treasure."

She giggled.

"He put it inside my music box."

I stared at her.

"What music box?"

"The one Daddy made."

"The little wooden boat."

My heartbeat quickened.

The toy boat.

Emma refused to sleep without it.

It had remained beside her bed every night since Daniel died.

I had never opened it.

I thought it was simply a handmade keepsake.

Alessandro looked at Marco.

"Send a team."

Marco shook his head.

"No need."

He smiled slightly.

"The nanny packed Emma's overnight bag."

He opened it.

Inside sat the small wooden sailboat Daniel had carved by hand.

Weathered.

Simple.

Ordinary.

Emma proudly handed it to Alessandro.

"Daddy said nobody steals treasure from pirates."

Alessandro examined the toy carefully.

His fingers discovered a tiny brass screw beneath the hull.

He twisted it.

The bottom compartment opened.

Something slid into his palm.

A black USB flash drive.

Daniel had hidden the evidence inside his daughter's favorite toy.

For three years...

The truth had been sleeping beside her pillow.

Before anyone could speak...

Every light in the hospital suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Emergency alarms screamed.

Backup generators failed to activate.

Marco reached for his weapon.

"We've lost power."

Then...

Gunshots echoed from somewhere downstairs.

Three rapid bursts.

Hospital staff began screaming.

Marco pressed his earpiece.

No response.

"They're jamming communications."

Alessandro's expression turned to steel.

"They're here."

Another explosion shook the building.

Glass shattered across the hallway.

The hospital wasn't experiencing a power outage.

It was under attack.

May you like

Someone had come for the flash drive.

And they were willing to kill everyone inside to get it.
