Chapter 16 – The Face in the Recording

No one moved.
The young forensic technician stood frozen in the doorway, gripping the evidence bag so tightly his knuckles had turned white.
The words echoed through the boardroom.
"Daniel recorded the face of the man who ordered his murder."
For a heartbeat...
No one breathed.
Then Alessandro spoke.
"Play it."
The technician connected the restored hard drive to the boardroom's presentation system.
The monitors flickered.
Static danced across the screen.
The same grainy video appeared.
Daniel Carter.
His face was bruised.
One eye swollen nearly shut.
Blood stained the collar of his work jacket.
But unlike the damaged version everyone had already seen...
This recording continued.
Daniel looked over his shoulder as if afraid someone was listening.
"If you're seeing this..."
His voice cracked.
"...I didn't have enough time."
He held up a thick folder.
"They've bribed inspectors."
"They've buried engineering reports."
"They've killed people."
The room remained silent.
Daniel swallowed.
"But that's not why they'll murder me."
He looked directly into the camera.
"They're going to kill me because..."
"...I learned who really ordered Mr. Moretti's father's assassination."
Alessandro's jaw tightened.
Twenty years.
Twenty years he had believed the official investigation.
Twenty years he had built his empire on the belief that his father's enemies had already been punished.
Daniel continued.
"The people everyone blamed..."
"...were only hired hands."
"They never planned anything."
"They were paid."
He reached toward the camera.
"If anything happens to me..."
"...find the man in this photograph."
The video froze for a second.
Then...
Daniel slowly turned a printed photograph toward the camera.
The image was blurry.
Only half the man's face was visible.
The rest was hidden beneath shadow.
Someone had clearly tried to destroy the evidence.
Marco leaned closer.
"Can we sharpen it?"
The forensic technician nodded.
"We've already begun."
He tapped several keys.
The software slowly reconstructed missing pixels.
The eyes became clearer.
The nose.
The mouth.
The room grew quieter with every passing second.
Finally...
The image stopped processing.
Everyone stared.
Judge Whitmore whispered,
"I know him."
Several directors looked at her.
She removed her glasses.
"That's..."
"...Richard Ashcroft."
The name struck the boardroom like lightning.
Richard Ashcroft.
Chairman of Ashcroft Capital.
One of the richest financiers in America.
Friend of presidents.
Donor to senators.
A man whose influence reached Wall Street, Washington, and half the corporate boards in New York.
Even I knew his name.
He had appeared on magazine covers for decades.
Marco frowned.
"That's impossible."
Judge Whitmore slowly shook her head.
"No."
"It explains everything."
Alessandro never looked away from the screen.
"Explain."
Twenty years earlier...
Richard Ashcroft had been one of his father's closest business partners.
After Antonio Moretti's murder...
Ashcroft Capital had quietly acquired nearly thirty percent of the company's shipping division.
At the time...
Everyone believed it was a rescue.
Now...
It looked very different.
"He profited," Alessandro said quietly.
Judge Whitmore nodded.
"Enormously."
Luca leaned back in his chair.
"What an extraordinary coincidence."
Every head turned.
He smiled.
"A blurry photograph?"
"A dead construction worker?"
"Anonymous accusations?"
He spread his hands.
"Surely we aren't rewriting twenty years of history because of this."
Several board members nodded uncertainly.
He had a point.
The evidence wasn't conclusive.
Not yet.
Alessandro noticed.
"So you're defending Richard Ashcroft?"
Luca shrugged.
"I'm defending facts."
Marco suddenly interrupted.
"Sir."
"What?"
"The forensic team restored another file."
Another?
The technician nodded.
"There were two recordings."
"This one was hidden."
He opened the second video.
Unlike the first...
This one had clearly been filmed secretly.
The camera pointed through the windshield of a parked truck.
Night.
Rain.
A waterfront warehouse.
The timestamp read:
Three days before Daniel's death.
Daniel whispered from behind the camera.
"They're meeting."
The image zoomed toward the warehouse entrance.
A black limousine arrived.
Richard Ashcroft stepped out.
Then another car.
The driver opened the rear door.
A second man emerged.
The room collectively leaned forward.
No one spoke.
The man walked beneath a streetlight.
His face became visible.
Marco's eyes widened.
"It can't be..."
Judge Whitmore stared in disbelief.
I felt my stomach twist.
Because I recognized him too.
He wasn't a stranger.
He wasn't some hidden criminal mastermind.
He had attended Alessandro's birthday every year.
He had stood in family photographs.
He had spoken at Antonio Moretti's funeral.
He was...
Victor Moretti.
Antonio's younger brother.
Alessandro's uncle.
The boardroom exploded.
"Impossible!"
"No!"
"Victor has been retired for years!"
"He lives in Switzerland!"
Voices filled the room.
Only Alessandro remained silent.
Victor.
The man who had practically helped raise him after his father's death.
The man he called Uncle Vic.
The recording continued.
There was no audio.
Only distant movement.
Richard Ashcroft handed Victor a thick briefcase.
Victor opened it.
Bundles of cash.
Then...
He handed Ashcroft a folder.
Daniel zoomed in.
Just enough for one page to become readable.
Across the top...
One line stood out.
SUCCESSION AGREEMENT
The video ended.
Nobody said a word.
Finally...
Luca broke the silence.
"So?"
Everyone looked at him.
"A business meeting."
He smiled again.
"My uncle met an investor."
"That's hardly murder."
Marco couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"You still deny it?"
"I deny assumptions."
Luca folded his hands.
"Nothing in that video proves anyone killed Daniel."
Or my father,
Alessandro thought silently.
At that moment...
The boardroom doors opened once more.
A police captain entered.
"Mr. Moretti."
He looked uneasy.
"We've received an urgent international notification."
"What happened?"
"Victor Moretti's private jet."
Alessandro's heartbeat quickened.
"What about it?"
"It departed Geneva six hours ago."
"And?"
"It disappeared from radar."
The room froze.
"What do you mean disappeared?"
"We've confirmed the aircraft made an emergency landing..."
The captain paused.
"...at a private airfield in upstate New York."
Marco frowned.
"Then where is Victor?"
The captain looked down at his report.
"The aircraft was empty."
No passengers.
No pilot.
No crew.
Only one thing remained inside.
A leather briefcase.
Addressed to:
Alessandro Moretti.
The captain slowly placed the briefcase on the boardroom table.
A small white envelope rested on top.
In familiar handwriting.
May you like
To my nephew.
If you are reading this... I am already dead.
