Chapter 17 – My Uncle's Last Confession

No one reached for the envelope.
It lay in the center of the walnut conference table like a live grenade.
Written across the front in elegant blue ink were seven words.
To my nephew. If you are reading this...
Alessandro recognized the handwriting immediately.
"Uncle Victor..."
His voice was barely audible.
For the first time since I had known him...
He sounded like a little boy instead of the man who ruled an empire.
The police captain nodded solemnly.
"We've already examined the briefcase."
"Was it opened?"
"No."
"Fingerprints?"
"Only Victor Moretti's."
"And yours."
The captain slid a pair of latex gloves across the table.
"We preserved everything."
Alessandro slowly put them on.
His movements were precise.
Almost mechanical.
As though emotion had become too dangerous to trust.
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Twenty pages.
The first sentence made every person in the room forget to breathe.
Alessandro, I have lived with this guilt for twenty-two years. I no longer deserve your forgiveness, but you deserve the truth.
Silence.
Alessandro continued reading aloud.
I did not kill your father.
But I helped the men who did.
Several directors gasped.
Judge Whitmore quietly closed her eyes.
Victor confessed that twenty-two years earlier, the Moretti Empire had been drowning in debt.
Antonio Moretti—Alessandro's father—refused to sell control of the company.
Richard Ashcroft wanted the shipping empire.
When Antonio rejected every offer...
Ashcroft proposed another solution.
Remove him.
Victor claimed he believed they only intended to force Antonio into retirement.
He convinced himself no one would die.
Until the bullets were fired outside St. Michael's Church.
By then...
It was too late.
Alessandro's voice never shook.
But his hands did.
Almost imperceptibly.
I noticed.
So did Marco.
The confession continued.
After your father's murder, Richard Ashcroft made me chairman.
He reminded me every day that I belonged to him.
Victor admitted he spent the next two decades laundering money through shell companies.
Buying judges.
Bribing inspectors.
Silencing witnesses.
Including...
Harbor Redevelopment.
My knees weakened.
Daniel.
His name appeared on the next page.
Daniel Carter discovered everything.
He wasn't looking for us.
He was only trying to save innocent workers from an unsafe building.
Victor wrote that Daniel accidentally uncovered decades of hidden financial records.
Construction fraud linked directly back to Ashcroft Capital.
Daniel refused every bribe.
Every threat.
Every warning.
Victor begged Richard to let him live.
Richard refused.
Alessandro stopped reading.
His eyes closed briefly.
Then...
He continued.
Daniel never stopped fighting, even after they beat him.
His final words to me were...
'If I stay quiet, somebody else's child dies next.'
Tears filled my eyes.
That sounded exactly like Daniel.
He had always believed protecting strangers mattered.
Even when it cost everything.
Emma.
I suddenly thought of Emma.
She would never remember hearing those words from her father.
But somehow...
She had inherited them.
Marco quietly cleared his throat.
"Sir..."
Alessandro nodded.
Victor's handwriting became shakier.
Richard ordered Daniel's execution.
I watched it happen.
I did nothing.
The boardroom remained absolutely still.
Every day since, I have carried two ghosts.
Your father.
And Daniel Carter.
Then came the sentence no one expected.
There is one final secret I have hidden from you.
Alessandro frowned.
The next page contained only one name.
Elena Moretti.
His mother's name.
My heart skipped.
Everyone in New York believed Elena Moretti had died of cancer when Alessandro was twenty-six.
Victor's confession said otherwise.
Your mother never died of illness.
Richard poisoned her slowly.
She knew too much.
Judge Whitmore whispered,
"My God..."
Victor explained that Elena had discovered documents proving Ashcroft's involvement in Antonio's murder.
She planned to testify before a federal grand jury.
Three weeks before her appearance...
She became mysteriously ill.
Doctors called it an aggressive cancer.
Victor now admitted the diagnosis had been fabricated.
She had been poisoned over several months.
Alessandro lowered the letter.
For the first time in years...
His composure shattered.
He walked to the windows overlooking Manhattan.
His shoulders rose and fell once.
Only once.
Then they became still again.
No one interrupted him.
Luca finally spoke.
"This proves nothing."
The room turned.
He folded his arms.
"It's only the ramblings of a guilty old man."
Marco stared in disbelief.
"Your uncle just confessed to conspiracy."
"He confessed after disappearing."
Luca shrugged.
"Convenient timing."
He leaned back.
"And rather convenient that he's unavailable for questioning."
Something about the way he said it...
Made Alessandro turn.
"You already knew."
Luca smiled faintly.
"Knew what?"
"That Victor was dead."
Silence.
Luca's smile faded.
"I didn't say that."
"No."
Alessandro replied quietly.
"You assumed it."
Before Luca could answer...
Marco's phone rang.
He listened for only a few seconds.
Then looked toward Alessandro.
"Sir..."
"What now?"
"We've identified the poison."
"What poison?"
"The one Victor described."
Marco swallowed.
"The laboratory compared Elena Moretti's preserved medical samples..."
"...with residues found in Victor's private residence."
The room held its breath.
"It's the same rare compound."
Judge Whitmore slowly stood.
"That means..."
Marco nodded.
"Mrs. Moretti was murdered."
A police detective hurried inside.
"Mr. Moretti!"
"We found something else."
He handed over a sealed evidence bag.
Inside...
A gold pocket watch.
The detective explained.
"It was recovered from Victor's abandoned aircraft."
Alessandro stared at it.
His face changed.
He recognized it instantly.
"It belonged to my father."
The detective nodded.
"There was something hidden inside."
He carefully opened the watch.
Behind the mechanism...
Folded tightly beneath the gears...
Was a tiny strip of paper.
Only four handwritten words.
Trust no Moretti.
The room fell silent again.
Alessandro looked slowly around the boardroom.
At every director.
At every executive.
At his own brother.
For the first time...
He realized the warning wasn't about one man.
It was about the entire family.
Then Marco's secure phone rang again.
This time...
His expression didn't merely darken.
It turned pale.
"Sir..."
"What happened?"
Marco looked directly at Alessandro.
"The FBI just arrested Richard Ashcroft."
Relief swept across the room.
Lasted only one second.
Marco finished the sentence.
"...but Richard says he'll testify."
Alessandro frowned.
"About what?"
Marco swallowed hard.
"He says..."
"...you're arresting the wrong Moretti."
The room went completely silent.
Richard Ashcroft had agreed to cooperate.
But according to the FBI...
The true mastermind behind every murder...
Every bribe...
May you like
Every betrayal...
Was still sitting inside the Moretti family.
