Chapter 7 – The Child Who Remembered Everything

The office door closed behind Alessandro with a quiet click.

For several long seconds, no one moved.

The emergency lights painted the hospital corridor in flashes of crimson.

Somewhere downstairs, another gunshot echoed through the building.

Then came silence.

Not peace.

The kind of silence that existed only because everyone was waiting for someone else to make the first fatal mistake.

Marco looked toward the door.

"I should be with him."

"You have orders," Attorney Kaplan reminded him.

Marco clenched his jaw.

"I've protected Mr. Moretti for twelve years."

"I've never let him walk into danger alone."

Kaplan answered softly,

"And tonight he isn't walking in as a billionaire."

"He's walking in as a father."

No one argued.

Because we all knew it was true.

Emma stirred in my arms.

Her fever had finally begun to break.

Tiny drops of sweat covered her forehead.

She opened sleepy blue-gray eyes.

"Mama..."

"I'm thirsty."

Dr. Weiss quickly handed me a bottle of water.

She took two tiny sips before looking around the room.

"Where's Mr. Alessandro?"

I hesitated.

"He's helping people."

She smiled faintly.

"He always helps people."

The simplicity of her faith broke something inside me.

Outside the office, footsteps echoed through the corridor.

Heavy.

Measured.

Not hurried.

Then Alessandro's voice carried through the darkness.

"You wanted the drive."

"I brought it."

Another voice answered.

Deep.

Calm.

Older.

"We expected nothing less."

I couldn't see them.

Only hear fragments through the partially damaged hallway.

Marco carefully opened the office door a few inches.

The corridor beyond was dimly lit.

About twenty feet away stood Alessandro.

Across from him...

Six heavily armed men wearing black tactical uniforms.

Their faces were hidden behind masks.

The man leading them removed his helmet.

Silver hair.

Cold blue eyes.

A scar running from his left temple to his jaw.

Marco whispered one name.

"Victor Kane."

Kaplan's face turned pale.

"The former CIA contractor?"

Marco nodded.

"Officially dead."

Apparently...

Not everyone stayed dead.

Victor extended one hand.

"The drive."

Alessandro held it up.

"You first."

Victor smiled.

"You've always negotiated."

"You've always underestimated me."

Alessandro replied.

"And you've always sold yourself to whoever paid more."

Victor chuckled.

"Business."

Before anyone could move...

Emma suddenly sat upright.

She stared through the narrow opening in the door.

Her sleepy expression vanished.

Her tiny finger pointed toward Victor Kane.

"I know him."

Every adult froze.

"What?"

Emma frowned.

"The mean man."

"He gave Daddy the red truck."

My blood turned cold.

Marco immediately closed the office door.

"Emma..."

"Are you sure?"

She nodded.

"He came to our house."

"He brought cookies."

"He talked to Daddy."

"When?"

She thought carefully.

"The day after my birthday."

The same day...

She claimed Daniel had secretly visited.

I knelt beside her.

"Sweetheart..."

"What did they talk about?"

Emma scrunched her little nose.

"I was hiding."

"Where?"

"In the laundry basket."

Daniel and I often played hide-and-seek with her.

She loved squeezing into impossible places.

No adult would have noticed.

But a child...

Could watch everything.

"What did you hear?"

Emma looked down at her shoes.

"Daddy was mad."

"What did he say?"

"He said..."

She spoke slowly, remembering each word.

"'I won't let you hurt my girls.'"

Tears burned my eyes.

That sounded exactly like Daniel.

"And then?"

"The mean man laughed."

"What did he say?"

Emma whispered,

"'It's too late.'"

The room became deathly quiet.

Marco immediately began recording her statement.

"Anything else?"

Emma nodded.

"The mean man said..."

"'The baby belongs to Moretti now.'"

My breath caught.

No one spoke.

Emma continued.

"Daddy said..."

"'She's Amelia's daughter.'"

"The man said..."

"'Blood matters more than love.'"

I closed my eyes.

Daniel had been fighting for Emma from the very beginning.

Another explosion shook the building.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

Marco looked toward the hallway.

"They're moving."

Suddenly...

The hospital lights came back on.

Only for three seconds.

Long enough for every security camera to reconnect.

Then they went dark again.

Marco smiled.

"I've got them."

"What?"

"The cameras uploaded."

"Automatically."

Before the power failed again.

He connected to the hospital server.

Hundreds of surveillance clips appeared.

One immediately caught his attention.

Timestamp:

Three Years Ago.

Location:

St. Gabriel Maternity Ward.

My heart began pounding.

"No..."

Marco clicked Play.

The footage showed newborn babies sleeping peacefully behind glass.

Nurses walked between bassinets.

Parents smiled through the nursery window.

Then...

Two women entered wearing surgical masks.

One nurse recognized them.

She opened the security door.

They disappeared inside.

Five minutes later...

They left carrying medical files.

Marco enlarged the image.

The first woman was unmistakable.

Vanessa Cole.

Three years younger.

The second...

Made Alessandro's blood run cold.

His own family attorney.

Richard Lawson.

The man who had managed Moretti legal affairs for over twenty-five years.

Kaplan whispered,

"Lawson..."

"I trusted him."

The video continued.

Another nurse entered.

She checked the bassinets.

Then suddenly froze.

She looked around frantically.

One baby was missing.

Thirty seconds later...

A different infant appeared in its place.

No alarms sounded.

No one questioned it.

The records had already been changed.

I covered my mouth.

"No..."

Dr. Weiss stared at the screen in horror.

"They switched newborns."

Marco slowed the footage frame by frame.

The missing baby's identification bracelet briefly became visible.

Patient Name:

Emma Moretti

Room:

214

Mother:

Confidential

The replacement bracelet read:

Emma Carter

My knees gave out.

I collapsed into the nearest chair.

I had given birth.

I remembered holding my baby.

I remembered crying.

But I had never imagined...

The child placed into my arms might not have been the same child born minutes earlier.

Emma climbed onto my lap.

"Mama?"

I hugged her tightly.

"So tightly she squeaked.

"I love you."

She giggled.

"I love you too."

Nothing.

Nothing in the world...

Could make me love her less.

Not blood.

Not DNA.

Not secrets.

She was my daughter.

Because I had raised her.

Because Daniel had loved her.

Because family wasn't created by laboratories.

Marco's tablet suddenly chimed.

He had hacked into Lawson's encrypted email.

One unread draft remained.

Subject:

Final Contingency

He opened it.

One sentence appeared.

"If Project Horizon fails, eliminate Subject 27 before the inheritance hearing."

Every face turned toward Emma.

Subject 27.

My daughter.

They hadn't wanted to control her anymore.

They wanted her dead.

At that exact moment...

The office window exploded inward.

Glass showered across the room.

A silenced bullet buried itself into the wall exactly where Emma had been sitting seconds earlier.

Marco tackled us to the floor.

"Sniper!"

A second shot shattered another window.

Someone outside already knew where Emma was.

Someone wasn't waiting for the flash drive anymore.

May you like

They had come...

For the child herself.
