Chapter 12 – The Envelope That Should Never Have Existed

No one breathed.

Marco held the brown envelope in both hands but made no move to open it.

Every pair of eyes settled on Alessandro.

His expression remained unreadable.

Only the tightening of his jaw betrayed that something inside him had shifted.

Vanessa was the first to recover.

"Don't touch that!"

Her voice cracked—not with outrage, but with panic.

She lunged forward.

Two security guards stepped in front of her before she reached the hidden closet.

"That's private!" she shouted. "You have no right to search my personal belongings!"

Alessandro finally looked at her.

"No right?"

His voice was calm.

"You announced my child before three hundred witnesses."

He glanced toward the silicone pregnancy prosthetic lying inside the box.

"You made your body the foundation of that announcement."

Another long silence settled over the room.

"Privacy," he continued quietly, "ended the moment you asked the world to believe a lie."

Vanessa's face turned ghostly white.

Marco handed him the envelope.

Written in black ink were only three words:

FOR ALESSANDRO ONLY

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

The envelope had never been sealed.

Alessandro slid a single finger beneath the flap.

Several photographs slipped onto the marble floor.

One landed face up.

A collective gasp swept through the hallway.

It showed Vanessa embracing another man inside a luxury hotel suite.

Not a friendly embrace.

Not an accidental one.

A passionate kiss.

The date stamp in the corner read:

Three weeks earlier.

Exactly one week after Vanessa had announced to close friends that she was "expecting."

Another photograph followed.

The same man.

The same suite.

Vanessa laughing while holding the fake pregnancy belly against her body.

A third picture.

The man adjusting the prosthetic beneath her dress.

Someone behind me whispered,

"My God..."

Vanessa stumbled backward.

"They're fake."

No one answered.

"They're edited!"

Still no one spoke.

Alessandro calmly picked up another photograph.

Then another.

His eyes never left the images.

He wasn't reacting.

He was cataloguing.

That frightened me more than rage ever could.

Inside the envelope was also a flash drive.

Marco connected it to a nearby laptop brought by one of the staff.

The screen flickered to life.

A video began playing.

The same hotel room.

The same couple.

This time there was no possibility of editing.

The timestamp matched the photographs.

The man's voice filled the silent hallway.

"You really fooled him."

Vanessa laughed.

"It wasn't difficult."

They clinked champagne glasses.

"Men believe what they desperately want."

The stranger smirked.

"So the great Alessandro Moretti thinks he's becoming a father."

Vanessa smiled proudly.

"By the wedding, half the city will believe it."

"And after the wedding?"

She shrugged.

"I become Mrs. Moretti."

The man raised an eyebrow.

"What about the baby?"

She laughed again.

"I'll lose it."

The room fell deathly silent.

"A tragic miscarriage."

She pretended to wipe away tears.

"Everyone will feel sorry for me."

The stranger burst into laughter.

"And he'll never question it."

Vanessa lifted her champagne glass.

"He'll spend the rest of his life trying to comfort me."

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Even the rain outside seemed quieter.

Judge Eleanor Whitmore slowly removed her glasses.

"I've sentenced murderers," she murmured.

"I've watched billion-dollar frauds collapse."

She looked directly at Vanessa.

"I've rarely witnessed deception this calculated."

Vanessa suddenly screamed.

"It isn't true!"

She pointed wildly at the computer.

"Someone made that video!"

Her voice had become shrill.

"They're trying to destroy me!"

She looked desperately toward the guests.

"Tell him!"

No one spoke.

The senators avoided her eyes.

The CEOs stared at the floor.

The socialites who had toasted her moments earlier quietly stepped away.

For the first time that evening...

Vanessa stood completely alone.

Alessandro closed the laptop himself.

Then he asked only one question.

"Who is he?"

Vanessa remained silent.

"Who."

She shook her head.

"I don't know."

Marco answered instead.

"We do."

Everyone turned.

"Our facial recognition system identified him from the hotel footage."

He handed Alessandro another file.

"His name is Adrian Pierce."

"A financial consultant."

"He has no consulting license."

Marco paused.

"He has, however, been investigated for blackmail, corporate espionage, and identity fraud."

Another pause.

"He disappeared forty-eight hours ago."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"He knew."

Marco nodded.

"It appears this was planned long before tonight."

My attention drifted to Emma.

She had fallen asleep on Alessandro's shoulder.

Her tiny hand still rested against his jacket.

She looked peaceful.

Completely unaware that she'd just shattered one of New York's most powerful engagements.

Alessandro noticed her too.

Without a word, he carefully shifted her weight so she would sleep more comfortably.

It was such a gentle movement that several guests exchanged surprised glances.

I had never seen this side of him.

Neither, I suspected, had anyone else.

Then another surprise arrived.

Marco's phone rang.

He listened for only a few seconds before covering the receiver.

"Sir."

"What is it?"

"Our digital forensic team."

"They examined the files on the flash drive."

"And?"

"The metadata shows it wasn't created by Adrian Pierce."

Alessandro looked up.

"Who sent it?"

Marco hesitated.

"Someone inside this house."

A ripple spread through the crowd.

"What?"

"The files were copied onto this flash drive from the Moretti mansion's private network... approximately two hours before tonight's engagement party."

Every servant exchanged nervous looks.

Someone inside the mansion had been collecting evidence.

For weeks.

Maybe months.

And had chosen tonight to expose everything.

Vanessa suddenly smiled.

It was small.

Almost victorious.

"You'll never find them."

Her confidence returned so abruptly that everyone noticed.

Alessandro did too.

"You sound certain."

"I am."

"Why?"

She leaned closer.

"Because the person you're looking for..."

"...is already dead."

The hallway erupted.

"What?"

She laughed softly.

"The only person who knew everything died three years ago."

My blood froze.

Three years ago.

Daniel.

My husband.

The construction worker who supposedly died in an accident.

Alessandro slowly turned toward me.

Our eyes met.

He saw the realization on my face.

"So..."

he said quietly,

"this involves your husband."

I couldn't answer.

My knees suddenly felt weak.

Vanessa watched me with cruel satisfaction.

"You never wondered why your husband was killed?"

The word echoed.

Killed.

Not died.

Killed.

Several guests gasped.

Vanessa realized too late what she had admitted.

She covered her mouth.

But the damage had been done.

Alessandro took one slow step toward her.

"You just corrected three years of lies."

She backed away.

"I misspoke."

"No."

His voice became colder than I had ever heard.

"You remembered."

She continued retreating until her back touched the mirrored wall.

"There was no accident."

Every word Alessandro spoke landed like a judge's hammer.

"There was a cover-up."

Another step.

"My employee's husband discovered something."

Another.

"And someone made certain he never spoke."

Vanessa's breathing became ragged.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

He stopped only inches away.

"I think..."

he said quietly,

"...you know exactly what he found."

Before she could answer—

The lights throughout the mansion suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the hallway.

Women screamed.

Security shouted orders.

Emergency lights flickered red across the walls.

Then...

A single gunshot echoed somewhere deep inside the mansion.

Emma jerked awake in Alessandro's arms.

And from somewhere below, Marco's voice thundered through the darkness:

"Sir! Someone has broken into the surveillance room!"
