Chapter 3 - The Secret Journals

Andrew drove straight to a private, highly secured suite at the Ritz-Carlton in Manhattan, far away from the Hamptons. He hired two private security guards to stand outside the suite door around the clock.
Inside the quiet room, after a warm bath, Valerie finally fell asleep, clutching a plush rabbit her late mother, Clara, had given her three years ago.
While Valerie slept, Andrew sat at the suite’s desk, gently opening her small, pink school backpack.
Inside, beneath her heavy textbooks, sat a hidden leather-bound notebook tucked into a secret pocket. Andrew’s heart pounded as he opened the cover.
written in childish, wobbly handwriting was a meticulous log of cruelty:
June 12: Sophia took my dinner away because I kept Mommy's picture under my pillow. She said Mommy is dead and dead people don't deserve space in this house.
July 4: I got 98% on my math test. Sophia hit my palms five times with the heavy wooden ruler because it wasn't 100%. She said if I tell Daddy, she will send me away to an orphanage and tell him I died.
August 1: I learned how to cry without making noise today so Sophia won't hear me from downstairs.
Tears scorched Andrew’s eyes as he read page after page.
For eight months, while he had been flying across the globe closing multi-billion-dollar private equity deals, his helpless daughter was being systematically broken, starved, and beaten into eerie perfection.
Sophia had forced Valerie to earn straight A’s and display flawless behavior so that neighbors and teachers would see a happy, thriving home, hiding the sadistic torture occurring behind locked doors.
Suddenly, Andrew’s phone buzzed on the nightstand.

It was Marcus, his chief head of security and a former military intelligence officer.
"Boss," Marcus said, his voice grim over the line. "You need to turn on the news right now."
