Chapter 8 - The Gala Showdown

Two weeks later.
Sophia’s high-priced legal team had managed to secure a temporary emergency bail hearing by arguing that she was a prominent member of the community with no prior criminal record.
To rally support from her high-society peers, Sophia’s family hosted a private fundraising reception at the Metropolitan Arts Club in Manhattan, claiming she was the innocent victim of a wealthy husband’s smear campaign.
Sophia stood near the grand fireplace wearing an emerald dress, sipping champagne, putting on a brave face for thirty wealthy donors and journalists.
"It’s just tragic," Sophia whimpered to a group of reporters. "Andrew used his money to buy fake medical reports. He wants to strip me of my rightful share of the estate."
Suddenly, the grand double doors of the ballroom slammed open.
Andrew walked in, wearing an immaculate black suit, looking imposing and unstoppable. Beside him walked his legal team, accompanied by two federal agents.
"Andrew?!" Sophia gasped, taking a panicked step back. "You can't be here! I have a temporary protective order against you!"
"The protective order was revoked twenty minutes ago by the Appellate Division, Sophia," Sarah Sterling announced, stepping forward and handing a document to the event manager.
Andrew walked up to the audiovisual console in the corner of the ballroom. He inserted a gold USB drive into the master system.
"What are you doing?!" Sophia shrieked.
The massive projection screen above the fireplace flickered to life.
In crystal-clear 4K resolution, with full audio surround sound, the security footage from the pantry played for the entire room to see.
The horrific audio of Sophia screaming at little Valerie and hitting her palms with the ruler echoed off the gilded walls:
"You are nothing! Your mother is dead, and your father doesn't care about you! You will obey me or you will starve!"
The entire ballroom went dead silent.

Socialites dropped their champagne flutes. Journalists gasped in utter horror, their camera flashes exploding like strobe lights as they turned from the screen directly to Sophia’s horror-stricken face.
"Oh my god," a prominent board member spat in disgust, turning away from her. "She’s a monster."
