Chapter 10 - The Trial of the Stepmother

Six months later.

The New York State Supreme Court was filled to capacity for the final sentencing hearing in The State of New York v. Sophia Salgado.

Sophia sat at the defense table in an orange state prison jumpsuit, her hands chained to her waist belt, her once-glamorous appearance completely gone.

Sitting at the front row of the gallery was Andrew, holding the small, warm hand of his daughter, Valerie. Valerie was wearing a pretty yellow dress, her cheeks full and healthy, her eyes bright and alive once again.

Judge Rebecca Davis tapped her heavy wooden gavel.

"Sophia Salgado," Judge Davis spoke, her stern voice resounding off the high ceilings. "Your conduct represents the most repulsive betrayal of maternal trust this court has seen in twenty years. You used terror, starvation, and physical violence against a grieving seven-year-old child to feed your own financial greed."

Sophia lowered her head, weeping pathetic, silent tears.

"It is the sentence of this court," Judge Davis declared, slamming her gavel down with thunderous force, "that you serve TWENTY-FIVE YEARS in state prison without the possibility of early parole!"

The gallery erupted into cheers and applause.

Sophia was hoisted up by federal marshals, wailing hysterically as she was dragged down the central aisle toward the heavy steel doors leading to state prison.

Valerie looked up at her father, her small hand squeezing his tightly. She didn't flinch. She didn't look down at the floor. She watched the woman who had hurt her disappear forever.
