CHAPTER 12 The Day After Lily Was Born

CHAPTER 12 The Day After Lily Was Born

The room felt smaller than before.

Not because anything had changed.

The walls were the same.

The furniture was the same.

The city lights outside the window were the same.

But I was different.

Because once you discover someone has lied to you…

you can never look at them the same way again.

I stared at Jason.

The man who held my hand when Lily was born.

The man who cried when he first heard her heartbeat.

The man who promised me:

“Nothing will ever come between us.”

And now I knew there was one day he had never explained.

The day after Lily was born.

The day his name appeared in my father’s records.

The day someone changed my daughter’s future.

“Where were you?”

Jason didn’t answer.

I asked again.

“Where were you the day after Lily was born?”

His face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Like he had spent years hoping this moment would never come.

“Emma…”

“No.”

My voice was quiet.

“Not this time.”

I pointed toward the chair.

“Sit down.”

Jason slowly sat.

Michael remained standing.

Watching.

Waiting.

“Start talking.”

Jason rubbed his hands together.

A nervous habit I had seen thousands of times.

But I had never realized what it meant.

He was afraid.

“I was at the hospital.”

My heart sank.

“Why?”

He looked at me.

“Because Diane called me.”

“About what?”

“About your father.”

I felt cold.

“My father?”

Jason nodded.

“She told me Edward Parker had left something behind.”

“The memory card?”

“Yes.”

“And you went there?”

“Yes.”

I stepped back.

“You went to my hospital room while I was recovering from giving birth?”

His eyes filled with shame.

“Yes.”

I couldn’t believe it.

“You were supposed to be with me.”

“I know.”

“You were supposed to be with Lily.”

“I know.”

“But you were working with your mother.”

“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.”

The words came out quickly.

But I stopped him.

“That doesn’t matter.”

He looked at me.

“What?”

“It doesn’t matter what you were trying to do.”

My voice shook.

“You left me vulnerable.”

Jason looked down.

“And you helped the person who was hurting me.”

Silence.

Jason took a deep breath.

“I didn’t know Diane planned to change Lily’s records.”

“Then what did you think she was doing?”

He didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“You didn’t ask.”

Jason looked away.

“No.”

“You trusted her.”

“Yes.”

“More than me.”

His silence answered.

I closed my eyes.

That was the truth I had been avoiding.

Not that Jason hated me.

Not that he never loved me.

The truth was worse.

When it mattered most…

he chose his mother.

“What happened at the hospital?”

Michael asked.

Jason looked at him.

“I went to meet Diane.”

“When?”

“The afternoon after Lily was born.”

“Who was there?”

“Diane.”

“Anyone else?”

Jason hesitated.

“Victoria.”

Michael’s expression changed.

“And?”

Jason looked down.

“Your father.”

I froze.

“My father was there?”

“No.”

Jason shook his head.

“Not alive.”

The words hit me.

“What?”

“Diane had Edward’s personal files.”

My breathing became shallow.

“She had already been searching his belongings.”

“Why?”

“Because she believed he hid evidence before he died.”

I looked at the memory card.

“And she thought it was connected to me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Jason looked at me.

“Because Diane knew your father trusted you.”

I whispered:

“My father trusted me?”

“She believed he left something with you.”

I touched the necklace.

“And she was right.”

Jason nodded.

“Yes.”

I stood and walked to the window.

For years, I believed my father’s death was a tragedy.

An accident.

Something painful but simple.

Now I realized it had been the beginning of a war.

A war I inherited without knowing.

“What did Diane ask you to do?”

Jason went quiet.

Too quiet.

“Jason.”

He closed his eyes.

“She asked me to find out where the evidence was.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Did you try?”

He hesitated.

A painful hesitation.

“Yes.”

I turned around.

My heart hurt.

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

Again.

That word.

Always fear.

“She threatened me.”

“With what?”

Jason looked at Lily’s room.

“With losing everything.”

I laughed softly.

“You mean money.”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“She threatened to destroy you.”

I froze.

“What?”

“She said if I didn’t cooperate, she would make sure your life became impossible.”

I stared.

“And you believed her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew what she was capable of.”

The room became quiet.

And for a moment…

I understood.

Jason wasn’t innocent.

But he wasn’t the monster either.

He was a man who had spent his entire life controlled by fear.

The problem was…

he allowed that fear to hurt the people he claimed to love.

Michael stepped closer.

“Did Diane know about Lily’s blood condition?”

Jason nodded.

“Yes.”

“What condition?”

Jason looked at me.

“Edward Parker had a rare genetic marker.”

I frowned.

“And Lily?”

“She inherited it.”

My heart tightened.

“So?”

Michael answered.

“It proves Lily is connected to Edward’s family line.”

I looked confused.

“She’s my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“But why does that matter to Diane?”

Jason looked at me.

“Because Edward wasn’t just investigating Bennett Holdings.”

“What else?”

“He was building a case.”

“Against Diane?”

“Yes.”

“Then why does Lily matter?”

Jason looked down.

“Because Edward hid the final evidence somewhere only his family would have.”

I touched the necklace.

“And Diane thinks Lily can lead her to it.”

“Yes.”

I shook my head.

“She’s a child.”

Jason looked ashamed.

“I know.”

A message suddenly appeared on my phone.

Unknown number.

One photo.

I opened it.

My blood turned cold.

It was Lily.

Sleeping.

Taken from outside the hotel room.

Underneath was one sentence.

You should have listened.

I dropped the phone.

Michael grabbed it.

His face changed.

Jason stood immediately.

“What happened?”

Michael showed him the screen.

Jason went pale.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“You know what this means.”

He nodded.

“She found us.”

The next hour was chaos.

Security checked every floor.

The police were contacted.

The hotel was placed under alert.

But the damage was already done.

Diane had proven something.

She could reach us.

Anytime.

Anywhere.

I sat beside Lily’s bed.

Holding her hand.

Jason stood near the door.

Watching.

For once, he wasn’t defending his mother.

For once, he wasn’t making excuses.

He looked terrified.

Good.

Because now he understood.

This wasn’t a family disagreement.

This wasn’t a marriage problem.

This wasn’t about pride.

This was about a little girl who trusted adults to protect her.

And too many adults had failed.

Jason finally spoke.

“Emma.”

I didn’t look at him.

“What?”

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.”

I stayed silent.

“But I want to help.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

His eyes moved to Lily.

“Because she’s my daughter.”

I waited.

Then he added:

“And because I finally understand something.”

“What?”

His voice broke.

“I spent my entire life afraid of losing my mother.”

A pause.

“But I never realized I was losing my own family.”

For the first time…

I saw Jason clearly.

Not the husband I wanted him to be.

Not the son Diane created.

Just a man who had finally realized the cost of his choices.

But realization was not redemption.

Not yet.

I looked at the door.

At the security officers outside.

At my sleeping daughter.

Then I said:

“Help me.”

Jason looked up.

“But understand one thing.”

“What?”

“My priority is Lily.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“If you lie to me again…”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“You won’t get another chance.”

Jason nodded slowly.

“I understand.”

And for the first time since I left Diane’s house…

we weren’t fighting each other.

We were preparing to fight the person who started it all.

Diane Bennett.

But neither of us knew…

she was already preparing her next move.

And this time…

May you like

she wasn’t coming after the evidence.

She was coming after me.
