CHAPTER 18The Man My Father Chose

CHAPTER 18The Man My Father Chose

I didn’t speak.

I couldn’t.

Because sometimes the most painful truths are not the ones people tell you.

They are the ones you already know.

The look on Jason’s face told me Diane wasn’t lying.

Not completely.

And that was enough.

I slowly placed the phone on the table.

Then I looked at him.

“Tell me.”

Jason didn’t move.

“Emma…”

“No.”

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard the warning.

“Not another explanation.”

I stepped closer.

“Not another excuse.”

Michael stood near the window, watching.

Jason looked down.

“I was going to tell you.”

I laughed softly.

“When?”

He looked at me.

“When you trusted me again?”

Silence.

Because that was exactly what he had been waiting for.

A perfect moment.

A moment where the truth would hurt less.

But there was no perfect moment for betrayal.

Only the moment when someone finally discovered it.

“Did my father know you?”

Jason looked surprised.

“What?”

“Before me.”

His silence answered.

“Yes.”

My heart tightened.

“How?”

Jason sat down.

“Your father met me years before we met.”

“When?”

“During a Bennett Holdings charity event.”

I stared.

“You were younger.”

“Yes.”

“And my father?”

“He was investigating my mother.”

I felt sick.

“So he knew.”

Jason nodded.

“He knew Diane was dangerous.”

“And he trusted you?”

Jason looked away.

“No.”

That answer surprised me.

“No?”

“He didn’t trust me.”

“Then why did he choose you?”

Jason took a breath.

“Because he believed I could become better than my family.”

The words hurt.

Because they sounded like my father.

My father always believed people could change.

Even when they didn’t deserve it.

Jason opened his wallet.

From inside, he removed a folded piece of paper.

“I kept this for years.”

I stared.

“What is it?”

He handed it to me.

My father’s handwriting.

Again.

I recognized it immediately.

Jason Bennett,

I stopped reading.

My hands shook.

“He wrote to you?”

Jason nodded.

“Before we met.”

I continued.

I do not know what kind of man you will become.

But I know what kind of man your mother wants you to be.

My eyes moved slowly.

Do not become someone who protects power at the expense of people.

I swallowed.

The letter continued.

If you ever care about my daughter, protect her from the people who will try to control her.

My vision blurred.

My father had known.

He had known everything.

He knew Diane.

He knew Jason.

He knew the danger.

And still…

he trusted him.

I looked up.

“Why didn’t you show me this?”

Jason’s eyes filled.

“Because I failed him.”

The room became quiet.

Michael finally spoke.

“Jason.”

Jason looked at him.

“Did Diane know about the letter?”

“Yes.”

My head turned.

“What?”

Jason nodded.

“She found out after my father died.”

“How?”

“She searched my belongings.”

“And?”

“She threatened to expose it.”

“Why?”

Jason looked at me.

“Because she knew your father had chosen me for a reason.”

“What reason?”

Jason’s voice became quiet.

“He believed I could protect you.”

I stared.

“And instead?”

Jason looked down.

“I helped the person he warned me about.”

The honesty hurt.

But it was different now.

Because Jason wasn’t defending himself.

He wasn’t blaming anyone.

He was accepting what he had done.

“Why did you marry me?”

The question finally came out.

The one I had avoided.

The one I was afraid to ask.

Jason looked at me.

At first, he said nothing.

Then:

“Because of Diane.”

My chest tightened.

I looked away.

But he continued.

“Not because she forced me to marry you.”

I stopped.

“What?”

“She introduced us.”

“Yes.”

“She expected me to get close to you.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you?”

Jason looked at Lily’s room.

“Because I wanted to know you.”

I didn’t answer.

“At first, I thought I was following my mother’s plan.”

His voice became softer.

“But then I met you.”

I looked at him.

“You were different.”

“That’s not enough.”

“I know.”

He nodded.

“But it changed everything.”

He swallowed.

“I stopped seeing you as a mission.”

A pause.

“I started seeing you as Emma.”

My eyes filled.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Jason looked broken.

“Because every time I tried…”

He stopped.

“Diane reminded me what she could do.”

“And you believed her.”

“Yes.”

The word hurt.

But it was honest.

“I thought I could defeat her quietly.”

He shook his head.

“I was wrong.”

The next morning, we returned to court.

But this time, everything had changed.

Rachel had new evidence.

The trust documents.

My father’s letter.

The shareholder records.

The truth was finally coming together.

Diane entered the courtroom.

But she looked different.

Not defeated.

Not yet.

But concerned.

Because she knew.

The game had changed.

The judge reviewed the documents.

Then looked at Diane.

“Mrs. Bennett.”

“Yes?”

“Did you know Edward Parker transferred ownership rights to his daughter?”

Diane remained silent.

“Mrs. Bennett?”

Finally:

“Yes.”

The courtroom reacted.

Rachel stood.

“So you knew Emma Parker had legal ownership connected to Bennett Holdings.”

“Yes.”

“And you still pursued custody of her daughter.”

Diane looked at her.

“I was protecting the company.”

Rachel’s expression hardened.

“A company.”

She pointed toward Lily.

“Over a child?”

Diane said nothing.

And that silence revealed everything.

Then Rachel presented the final piece.

A recording.

Diane’s voice.

From years earlier.

A conversation with Jason.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized the voice.

Diane said:

“Marry her.”

Jason’s younger voice answered:

“I don’t want to use her.”

Diane replied:

“You don’t have to love her.”

Silence.

“You only need to get close enough.”

The courtroom froze.

My eyes closed.

Even though I already knew…

hearing it still hurt.

Then the recording continued.

Jason’s voice:

“And if I fall in love with her?”

Diane laughed.

“You won’t.”

The recording ended.

Everyone looked at Jason.

Including me.

Because there was the proof.

The beginning of our marriage.

A plan.

A manipulation.

A lie.

Jason looked at me.

And I saw pain.

Real pain.

But pain didn’t erase history.

It didn’t erase the nights I cried alone.

It didn’t erase every time I needed him and he stayed silent.

The judge called for order.

But my mind was somewhere else.

Because I finally knew the truth.

Jason had entered my life because of a plan.

But somewhere along the way…

he became the one person who could either destroy me…

or help me finally win.

After court, Jason stopped me.

“Emma.”

I turned.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“I know I don’t deserve you.”

I stayed silent.

“But I need you to know something.”

“What?”

“The moment I saw Lily being hurt…”

His voice broke.

“That was the moment I realized I wasn’t afraid of my mother anymore.”

I looked at him.

“I was afraid of becoming her.”

The words stayed with me.

Because maybe that was the real battle.

Not Diane.

Not the money.

Not the inheritance.

The battle was whether people could choose who they became.

Jason looked toward Lily.

“I can’t change the man I was.”

A pause.

“But I can fight to become someone she deserves.”

I didn’t forgive him.

Not yet.

But for the first time…

I believed he might actually try.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice.

Not Diane.

Not Victoria.

Someone else.

“Emma Parker?”

“Yes.”

“This is Detective Harris.”

My heart tightened.

“Why are you calling me?”

A pause.

Then:

“We found something connected to your father’s death.”

I froze.

“What?”

His voice became serious.

“The accident report was wrong.”

My breathing stopped.

“We found evidence that Edward Parker was murdered.”

I looked at Jason.

At Lily.

At the life I thought I knew.

And I realized the final secret had not been uncovered yet.

Because the person who killed my father…

was still out there.

May you like

Watching.

Waiting.
