CHAPTER 16 Victoria Hale’s Confession

CHAPTER 16 Victoria Hale’s Confession

The moment Victoria Hale entered the courtroom, I knew.

Diane had planned this.

Of course she had.

Diane Bennett never walked into a battle without knowing every possible outcome.

She didn’t just collect information.

She collected weapons.

And Victoria was one of them.

Victoria stopped near the witness stand.

She looked different from the woman who appeared at my hotel room.

That night, she looked afraid.

Today, she looked defeated.

Like someone who had spent years carrying a burden too heavy to hold.

Diane watched her carefully.

Almost proudly.

Like a person admiring a tool they created.

Rachel leaned toward me.

“Do you know what she’s going to say?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

But deep down…

I was afraid.

Because Victoria knew things about me.

Things nobody else knew.

The judge looked at her.

“Please take the stand.”

Victoria walked forward.

Raised her hand.

And swore to tell the truth.

I wondered if she even knew what truth meant anymore.

Diane’s attorney approached.

“Ms. Hale.”

“Yes.”

“You were employed by Bennett Holdings for many years?”

“Yes.”

“In what capacity?”

“I was the Bennett family attorney.”

“And during that time, did you handle sensitive matters?”

“Yes.”

“Including matters involving Emma Parker?”

Victoria looked at me.

Then lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

Diane’s attorney turned toward the judge.

“Your Honor, Ms. Hale has information directly related to the mother’s credibility.”

Rachel stood.

“Objection. This appears designed to attack character rather than establish facts.”

The judge considered.

“Overruled. For now.”

The attorney continued.

“Ms. Hale, did Emma Parker know about her father’s financial investigation?”

Victoria hesitated.

Then:

“Yes.”

The courtroom reacted.

My heart stopped.

“No.”

I whispered it.

Rachel looked at me.

Confused.

I shook my head.

Because it wasn’t true.

I didn’t know.

I never knew.

The attorney continued.

“Did she possess documents connected to Edward Parker?”

Victoria’s silence was worse than any answer.

“Ms. Hale?”

Finally, she said:

“Yes.”

A wave of whispers moved through the courtroom.

I felt dizzy.

“That’s a lie.”

My voice came out louder than I intended.

Everyone looked at me.

The judge warned:

“Mrs. Parker, please remain silent.”

I sat down.

But my mind was racing.

Why would Victoria say that?

Why?

The attorney approached again.

“Did Emma Parker hide information from Jason Bennett?”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Jason immediately stood.

“No.”

The judge struck the table.

“Mr. Bennett, sit down.”

Jason looked furious.

But he obeyed.

The attorney smiled.

“Ms. Hale, did Diane Bennett ever instruct you to alter records?”

Victoria looked at Diane.

A long silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

That answer shocked everyone.

Including Diane.

The attorney paused.

“What?”

Victoria continued.

“She instructed me.”

Rachel leaned forward.

The judge looked surprised.

“Explain.”

Victoria took a breath.

“Diane Bennett wanted control over the narrative surrounding Lily’s birth.”

The attorney frowned.

“Are you saying the records were altered?”

“Yes.”

“By whom?”

“Me.”

The courtroom exploded.

The judge demanded silence.

I stared at Victoria.

She had just admitted everything.

But something felt wrong.

Because Diane wasn’t looking angry.

She was looking calm.

Too calm.

Rachel stood.

“Ms. Hale.”

“Yes.”

“You said you altered the records.”

“Yes.”

“Under Diane Bennett’s instructions?”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you helping her today?”

Victoria looked down.

She didn’t answer.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Are you helping her?”

Another silence.

Finally:

“No.”

The room went quiet.

Rachel turned slightly.

“Then why are you here?”

Victoria looked at me.

And for the first time…

I saw tears in her eyes.

“Because I owe Emma Parker the truth.”

Diane’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

A crack.

A moment of uncertainty.

Rachel continued.

“What truth?”

Victoria took a deep breath.

“The truth is that Emma Parker never hid anything.”

The courtroom became silent.

“The truth is that Diane Bennett created the entire story.”

The judge leaned forward.

“Be specific.”

Victoria nodded.

“Diane knew Edward Parker left evidence behind.”

“Evidence of what?”

“Her crimes.”

A pause.

“She needed a way to locate it.”

“And?”

“She discovered Edward trusted his daughter.”

I touched my necklace.

Victoria looked at it.

“That necklace.”

My heart stopped.

“What about it?”

“Edward hid the evidence there.”

The courtroom went silent.

Rachel looked at me.

Everyone did.

Victoria continued:

“Diane believed Emma knew what was inside.”

“But I didn’t.”

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“I know you didn’t.”

The honesty hurt.

Because she was admitting she had known I was innocent.

And still stayed silent.

Rachel walked closer.

“Ms. Hale.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you change Lily’s DNA test?”

Victoria looked at Jason.

Then at me.

“Because Diane wanted proof that Lily was connected to Edward.”

“But the test was manipulated.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Victoria swallowed.

“Because the real result showed something Diane couldn’t accept.”

“What?”

Victoria looked at Lily.

“The real result proved Lily was not a threat.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Victoria answered:

“It proved Lily was only a child.”

Silence.

“She had no legal connection to Bennett Holdings.”

“Then why was Diane afraid?”

Victoria looked at me.

“Because Diane realized something.”

“What?”

“She realized Edward Parker didn’t hide the evidence for himself.”

My heart tightened.

“Then who did he hide it for?”

Victoria whispered:

“For Emma.”

I looked at the necklace.

My father.

My father had known.

He knew someone would come after me.

Then Diane’s attorney stood.

“Ms. Hale.”

Victoria looked at him.

“You are admitting to committing fraud.”

“Yes.”

“You are admitting to changing medical records.”

“Yes.”

“You are admitting you lied for years.”

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.”

The attorney smiled.

“So why should this court believe you now?”

Victoria looked directly at him.

“Because I have proof.”

Everyone froze.

“What proof?”

Victoria opened the file she carried.

Inside were documents.

Original documents.

Not copies.

Not edited versions.

She handed them forward.

“I kept copies of everything Diane ordered me to change.”

Diane stood suddenly.

“That is enough.”

The judge looked at her.

“Mrs. Bennett, sit down.”

But Diane didn’t.

Because for the first time…

she looked afraid.

Victoria placed the final document on the table.

“This is the original custody strategy prepared by Diane Bennett.”

Rachel picked it up.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she stopped.

“What?”

I looked at her.

“What is it?”

Rachel slowly turned toward me.

Her face had changed.

“What?”

She looked at the document again.

Then at Jason.

Then at Diane.

“Your Honor…”

Her voice was quiet.

“This document proves Diane Bennett never intended to obtain custody of Lily.”

The courtroom froze.

“Then what did she intend?”

Rachel looked at me.

And I knew from her expression…

the answer was worse than I imagined.

“She intended to use Lily as a way to force Emma Parker to reveal the location of Edward Parker’s evidence.”

My heart stopped.

Diane wasn’t trying to take my daughter.

She was trying to use her.

The judge looked at Diane.

“Mrs. Bennett, is this true?”

For several seconds…

Diane said nothing.

Then she smiled.

A cold, terrifying smile.

And she said:

“You all think this is about a child.”

She looked directly at me.

“It never was.”

My blood turned cold.

“Then what was it about?”

Diane’s smile disappeared.

“The inheritance your father left you.”

The courtroom went silent.

I felt my heart stop.

Because I had never inherited anything.

My father died with almost nothing.

Or at least…

that was what I had always believed.

Diane leaned back.

May you like

And whispered:

“Emma Parker, you have no idea who you really are.”
