CHAPTER 4 The Evidence Hidden Before Our Wedding

CHAPTER 4 The Evidence Hidden Before Our Wedding

The first thing I noticed was the date.

Not the amount.

Not the company name.

Not even Jason’s signature.

The date.

Three months before our wedding.

I stared at the document until the numbers blurred.

Because three months before Jason promised to love me forever…

he was already keeping secrets.

The hotel room was silent except for the soft sound of Lily breathing.

She was asleep beside me, her stuffed rabbit tucked under her chin.

My daughter looked peaceful.

And that made everything hurt more.

Because while I was choosing flowers for our wedding, writing vows, and imagining our future…

Jason Bennett was signing documents connected to his family’s hidden business dealings.

I turned the page.

Another transaction.

Then another.

My hands became colder with every line.

Bennett Private Holdings.

Westbridge Consulting.

North Harbor Investments.

Different names.

Different companies.

Same pattern.

Money moved.

Disappeared.

Returned somewhere else.

I didn’t understand everything.

But I understood enough.

Someone had built a maze.

And Jason knew the way through it.

“Emma.”

Michael’s voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

He was standing near the window, watching me carefully.

“How much did you find?”

I held up the papers.

“He signed.”

Michael nodded slowly.

“I know.”

“No.”

My voice cracked.

“You don’t understand.”

I looked at the signature again.

“This was before we got married.”

“Yes.”

“He knew before I married him.”

“Yes.”

I stood suddenly.

“So every promise…”

My voice shook.

“Every time he told me I was his family…”

I looked at Michael.

“He already knew what his family was doing.”

Michael didn’t answer.

Because there was no answer that could make it hurt less.

I walked to the window.

Outside, Chicago was covered in gray morning clouds.

Everything looked normal.

That was the cruelest part.

The world never stopped when your heart broke.

“Why would he do this?”

Michael was quiet.

Then he said:

“Because Jason was raised to believe one thing.”

“What?”

“That love is something you use.”

I turned around.

Michael looked at the folder.

“My mother taught us that people are either useful or useless.”

“That’s horrible.”

“Yes.”

He paused.

“Jason hated that when he was younger.”

“And then?”

“He became exactly like her.”

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because I had spent years trying to convince myself Jason was different from Diane.

But maybe I was wrong.

Maybe he wasn’t different.

Maybe he was just better at hiding it.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

Jason.

Please let me see Lily.

I stared at the screen.

Michael noticed.

“You’re thinking about letting him.”

I didn’t answer.

Because I was.

Despite everything.

Despite the betrayal.

Despite the lies.

Jason was still Lily’s father.

And I knew separating a child from a parent wasn’t something to do out of anger.

But then I remembered the dining room.

The sound.

The silence.

His silence.

“I don’t want to punish him,” I said.

Michael nodded.

“Good.”

“I want Lily to have her father.”

“But?”

I looked at him.

“But I don’t know if I can trust the man who comes with him.”

Michael nodded.

“That’s the right question.”

“What do you mean?”

“Before you decide if Jason deserves access to Lily…”

He pointed at the folder.

“Find out what he’s capable of.”

Two hours later, I left the hotel.

Not alone.

Michael insisted on coming.

I hated that I needed protection.

But I hated more the possibility that I didn’t recognize danger when it stood in front of me.

We went to a small coffee shop away from downtown.

Nobody from the Bennett family would expect me there.

Michael placed another folder on the table.

“This is from my investigation.”

I opened it.

Inside were newspaper articles.

Old photographs.

Court documents.

Names.

“Who are these people?”

“People who challenged Diane.”

I looked closer.

A woman.

A man.

A business owner.

“What happened to them?”

Michael looked away.

“Some lost everything.”

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“And some?”

“They disappeared from public life.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“This isn’t normal family drama.”

“No.”

Michael’s voice was serious.

“It never was.”

I turned another page.

Then I stopped.

A photograph.

Jason.

He looked younger.

Maybe twenty-two.

Standing beside Diane.

Both smiling.

Behind them was a company building.

I flipped the page.

A handwritten note was attached.

Jason agreed to continue the arrangement.

My stomach dropped.

“What arrangement?”

Michael’s expression changed.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t see that yet.”

“Why?”

“Because this part involves you.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Me?”

He nodded.

“Before your wedding.”

I looked at him.

“Tell me.”

Michael took a breath.

“When Jason met you, Diane investigated you.”

I felt sick.

“What?”

“She wanted to know who you were.”

“Why?”

“Because she didn’t approve of anyone entering the Bennett family without control.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So I was a project?”

Michael didn’t deny it.

“Diane believed you could be useful.”

My face went numb.

“How?”

He looked at the document.

“She thought your background could help clean the family image.”

“What does that mean?”

“Your father’s reputation.”

I froze.

“My father?”

Michael nodded.

“Diane wanted a connection to respected people outside the Bennett circle.”

I stared at him.

“So Jason married me because his mother wanted him to?”

“No.”

Michael’s answer came quickly.

“Jason chose you.”

For one second, relief appeared.

Then Michael continued.

“But not for the reason you hoped.”

The relief disappeared.

“What reason?”

Michael looked at me.

“He thought he could change the plan.”

I frowned.

“What plan?”

“The plan Diane created.”

I whispered:

“Which was?”

Michael hesitated.

Then:

“Marry you. Gain your trust. Use your family connections. Then protect Bennett Holdings from investigation.”

The coffee shop noise disappeared.

People talked around me.

Cups moved.

Machines made coffee.

But I heard nothing.

Because the man I loved…

might have started loving me as part of a strategy.

I shook my head.

“No.”

Michael didn’t push.

He simply waited.

I pulled out my phone.

I found an old wedding photo.

Jason looking at me.

Smiling.

Holding my hands.

He looked so happy.

Was it real?

Or was I just seeing what I wanted to see?

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A woman’s voice came through.

“Emma Parker.”

I recognized it immediately.

Diane.

My body stiffened.

“What do you want?”

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I want my granddaughter.”

I looked at Michael.

“No.”

A pause.

Then Diane laughed softly.

“You still think this is about what happened last night.”

My grip tightened.

“What are you talking about?”

“Emma, you made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“You thought you were leaving the Bennett family.”

Her voice became colder.

“You don’t leave the Bennett family.”

I stood.

“You hurt my daughter.”

“No.”

Her answer was immediate.

“You’re confused.”

I felt my anger rise.

“I watched you.”

“You watched a moment.”

A pause.

“But you don’t know the whole story.”

“What story?”

Diane’s voice lowered.

“The story of who Lily really belongs to.”

My blood froze.

“What did you say?”

“I think it’s time you learned the truth about your own husband.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Michael looked concerned.

“What did she say?”

I swallowed.

“She said…”

My voice barely came out.

“She knows something about Lily.”

And for the first time since leaving Jason…

May you like

I wasn’t only afraid of what he had done.

I was afraid of what Diane Bennett was about to reveal.
