CHAPTER 5 The Secret About Lily

CHAPTER 5 The Secret About Lily
For five minutes after Diane ended the call, I didn’t move.
I just sat there.
Holding my phone.
Listening to the noise around me.
A baby crying at another table.
A barista calling out someone’s coffee order.
A couple laughing near the window.
Normal things.
Things that belonged to normal lives.
But my life had stopped being normal the moment Diane Bennett put her hand on my daughter.
And now she was telling me Lily belonged to some secret I didn’t know about.
I looked at Michael.
“What does she know?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me.
“Michael.”
He rubbed his forehead.
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
I stood.
“Then why did you bring me into this?”
“Because I know Diane.”
His voice became serious.
“She doesn’t threaten people with things she doesn’t believe she can use.”
My heart raced.
“So she’s telling the truth?”
“Not necessarily.”
“Then what?”
Michael looked at me.
“She’s creating fear.”
I looked down at my phone.
A mother’s greatest fear wasn’t losing money.
It wasn’t losing a house.
It wasn’t losing a marriage.
It was losing her child.
And Diane knew exactly where to strike.
“She wants Lily.”
Michael nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“That’s what we need to find out.”
We returned to the hotel before noon.
The first thing I did was check every lock.
Every window.
Every possible entrance.
Michael noticed.
“You think she’ll come here?”
“I don’t know.”
I looked at Lily playing on the bed.
“But I know she thinks rules don’t apply to her.”
Michael didn’t disagree.
My daughter looked up.
“Mommy?”
I forced a smile.
“Yes, baby?”
“Can we get pancakes?”
For a second, everything stopped.
Because that was Lily.
Not a witness.
Not a piece of evidence.
Not a weapon in a family war.
Just a little girl who wanted pancakes.
I smiled.
“Yes.”
She smiled back.
And that tiny smile reminded me why I couldn’t fall apart.
Not now.
Not ever.
While Lily ate, I opened the folder again.
This time, I searched for anything related to her.
Nothing.
No records.
No names.
No documents.
Only business information.
I looked at Michael.
“There’s nothing about Lily.”
“Because Diane wouldn’t keep something like that in writing.”
“Then what is she talking about?”
Michael looked uncomfortable.
“There is one possibility.”
“What?”
He hesitated.
“Before you and Jason married, Diane tried to have children’s custody agreements changed inside the family.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“She believed bloodline was everything.”
“That doesn’t explain Lily.”
“No.”
Michael looked at the window.
“But it explains her obsession with control.”
I sat down.
“Jason never talked about this.”
“He wouldn’t.”
“Why?”
“Because Jason learned something very early.”
“What?”
Michael looked at me.
“Secrets are safer than the truth.”
That evening, Jason arrived.
I knew because the hotel called my room.
“Mrs. Parker?”
“Yes?”
“There is a gentleman downstairs asking to see you.”
My stomach tightened.
“Name?”
“Jason Bennett.”
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
I looked at Lily.
She was watching cartoons.
Safe.
Protected.
I told the front desk:
“Send him up.”
Michael was surprised.
“You’re letting him in?”
“I need answers.”
“You need to be careful.”
“I know.”
I looked at him.
“But I need to hear him lie.”
A few minutes later, there was a knock.
Jason stood outside.
He looked different.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Broken.
His shirt was wrinkled.
His eyes were tired.
For one second, I saw my husband.
The man I loved.
Then I remembered the empty chair.
The silent father.
The signature on the documents.
“Can I come in?”
I stepped aside.
“Lily is here.”
His face softened immediately.
“Where is she?”
“Playing.”
Jason walked toward the room.
Then stopped.
Because he saw Michael.
The color drained from his face.
“Michael.”
His voice was barely a whisper.
Michael stared back.
“Hello, Jason.”
A long silence followed.
Not an angry silence.
A guilty one.
Jason looked at me.
“You shouldn’t be talking to him.”
I almost laughed.
“You don’t get to tell me who I can talk to anymore.”
“Emma, you don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Jason looked at Michael.
“Leave.”
Michael didn’t move.
“Still giving orders?”
Jason’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t know what’s happening.”
Michael smiled sadly.
“I know exactly what’s happening.”
I stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Both men stopped.
I looked at Jason.
“You have one chance.”
His expression changed.
“One chance for what?”
“The truth.”
He swallowed.
“What truth?”
I held up the document.
“This.”
His face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“You know about that.”
“Yes.”
He looked down.
“Emma…”
“No.”
My voice shook.
“Don’t say my name like you’re hurt.”
He looked at me.
“You married me knowing there were secrets.”
“I know.”
“You let me build a life with you.”
“I know.”
“You watched your mother hurt our daughter.”
His face collapsed.
“I didn’t know she would do that.”
“But you knew she could.”
Silence.
That was the answer.
I felt tears forming.
Not because I missed him.
Because I finally understood him.
“Did you marry me because your mother wanted you to?”
Jason looked away.
That was all I needed.
“Answer me.”
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“I didn’t.”
“Then why?”
He looked at Lily’s room.
“I loved you.”
I wanted to believe him.
God, part of me wanted to believe him.
But love without honesty wasn’t enough.
“Then why did you hide everything?”
Jason sat down.
Because suddenly he looked exhausted.
“Because I was trying to protect you.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
He looked up.
“I was.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
His silence confirmed it.
Then he said something I didn’t expect.
“Diane isn’t the only danger.”
I froze.
“What?”
Jason looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
“Emma, you need to understand something.”
“What?”
“My mother doesn’t want Lily because she’s my daughter.”
My heart started beating faster.
“Then why?”
Jason looked at me.
“Because Lily is the only thing that can destroy her.”
I stared.
“What are you talking about?”
Jason lowered his voice.
“There is a secret about Lily.”
My hands became cold.
“The same secret Diane has been hiding.”
Michael stepped forward.
“What secret?”
Jason looked at him.
Then back at me.
And the words that came next changed everything.
“Lily isn’t just my daughter.”
I felt the room spin.
“What?”
Jason closed his eyes.
“Emma…”
“No.”
I stepped back.
“What are you saying?”
He whispered:
“I’m saying Diane knows something about Lily’s birth that you don’t.”
My heart stopped.
Because there was only one person who could answer that question.
Me.
I carried Lily.
I gave birth to her.
I knew everything.
Didn’t I?
Jason looked at me.
And for the first time in our marriage…
I saw real fear in his eyes.
“Emma…”
His voice broke.
“You need to call your doctor.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because the hospital records…”
He swallowed.
“Were changed.”
The room went silent.
And suddenly, the biggest mystery wasn’t why Diane hurt my daughter.
May you like
It was why someone had gone to such lengths…
to hide the truth about the day Lily was born.
