CHAPTER 8 My Father’s Hidden Connection

CHAPTER 8 My Father’s Hidden Connection

I read the message ten times.

Maybe eleven.

But the words never changed.

Ask Jason why your father really died.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

A stranger’s message.

A hidden connection.

A dead father.

A husband who looked like he knew more than he admitted.

My entire life suddenly felt like a room where someone had moved all the furniture while I was sleeping.

Everything looked familiar.

But nothing was where it belonged.

I looked at Jason.

“Tell me.”

He didn’t move.

“Emma…”

“No.”

My voice was quiet.

That scared him more than if I had screamed.

“I am done finding pieces of my own life from other people.”

Jason swallowed.

“I didn’t want you to know this way.”

“How did you want me to know?”

He had no answer.

That was becoming his pattern.

Silence.

Always silence.

Michael looked between us.

“Jason.”

Jason looked at him.

“Don’t.”

Michael’s expression hardened.

“No.”

He stepped forward.

“She deserves the truth.”

Jason looked exhausted.

“You don’t understand what you’re asking.”

“I understand perfectly.”

Michael pointed at the papers.

“For years, everyone protected Diane.”

His voice became sharper.

“Your father protected her.”

“Your mother protected her.”

“And you protected her.”

Jason looked away.

Michael continued:

“But Emma’s father died because of secrets connected to her.”

I froze.

“What?”

I turned to Michael.

“What did you say?”

He hesitated.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

My heart started pounding.

“What happened to my father?”

Jason closed his eyes.

“I don’t know everything.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course you don’t.”

“Emma.”

“No.”

I stepped away.

“You always know enough to hide the truth.”

That hurt him.

Good.

Because I needed him to understand.

This wasn’t a normal argument.

This was my entire life.

“My father died in a car accident,” I said.

Jason nodded slowly.

“That’s what the official report says.”

My stomach dropped.

“The official report?”

Michael looked at me.

“Your father was investigating Bennett Holdings before he died.”

I stared.

“My father was an accountant.”

“Yes.”

“He wasn’t a detective.”

“No.”

Michael opened another document.

“But he found something.”

I looked down.

A copy of a report.

The handwriting was familiar.

My father’s handwriting.

I knew it immediately.

My hands began shaking.

“Where did you get this?”

Michael answered:

“From the Bennett archives.”

I looked at the page.

The title was clear.

Financial Irregularities Investigation.

My father had been tracking money movements.

The same companies.

The same names.

The same network.

Bennett Holdings.

Westbridge Consulting.

North Harbor Investments.

The same names I had seen before.

“This was hidden?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Michael looked at Jason.

“Because your father was close to exposing Diane.”

I felt sick.

“My father knew her?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Michael was quiet.

Then Jason finally spoke.

“Your father worked with my family before I was born.”

I looked at him.

“You knew?”

“I knew your father’s name.”

“Not that he investigated your mother?”

Jason looked down.

“No.”

“Did Diane know?”

“Yes.”

The answer came too quickly.

I felt my chest tighten.

“She knew.”

Jason nodded.

“And then she met me.”

I whispered:

“No.”

Michael looked at me.

“Emma.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Because I finally understood.

The timing.

The investigation.

The marriage.

The secrets.

Diane hadn’t simply accepted me because Jason loved me.

She had recognized my name.

She had seen an opportunity.

“What did she want?”

Nobody answered.

So I asked again.

“What did Diane want from me?”

Jason looked broken.

“She wanted access.”

“To what?”

“Your father’s old records.”

I stared.

“My father’s records were gone.”

Jason shook his head.

“Not all of them.”

The room became silent.

“Where are they?”

He looked at me.

“You have them.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“The necklace.”

I frowned.

“What necklace?”

“The one your father gave you.”

I touched my throat instinctively.

My hand moved to the small silver necklace I had worn since I was a teenager.

“This?”

Jason nodded.

“Diane always wanted it.”

I felt cold.

“Why?”

“Because she believed your father hid something inside it.”

I laughed.

“No.”

“Emma.”

“No.”

I held the necklace.

“My father gave me this before he died.”

“Yes.”

“He told me never to take it off.”

Michael looked at me.

“Did he?”

I stared at him.

“Yes.”

Michael and Jason exchanged a look.

And that frightened me.

“What?”

Michael said quietly:

“Because your father knew someone might come looking for it.”

That night, after Jason left, I sat alone beside Lily’s bed.

The necklace rested in my hand.

A simple piece of silver.

Nothing special.

At least, that was what I always believed.

I remembered my father.

The last conversation we had.

I was sixteen.

He was tired.

Worried.

But he smiled.

“Emma.”

“Yes, Dad?”

“Some things are worth protecting.”

I laughed.

“Like what?”

He touched my necklace.

“Truth.”

At the time, I thought he meant honesty.

Now I wondered if he meant something else.

I carefully examined the necklace.

For the first time in years, I looked at it differently.

The back had a tiny mark.

Something I had never noticed.

A small line.

Almost invisible.

I pressed it.

Nothing happened.

I tried again.

Then I felt something move.

A tiny click.

My breath stopped.

The necklace opened.

Inside was something impossibly small.

A hidden compartment.

And inside that compartment…

was a tiny memory card.

I stared at it.

My hands shook.

My father had hidden something.

Something Diane wanted.

Something people had lied about.

Something worth manipulating an entire family for.

I grabbed my phone.

Before I could call Michael, a sound came from the hallway.

A quiet movement.

Someone outside my door.

I froze.

I looked at Lily.

Still sleeping.

The handle moved.

Slowly.

Someone was trying to enter.

I grabbed the nearest object.

The door opened slightly.

Then a voice whispered:

“Emma.”

My blood ran cold.

Because I recognized it.

Not Diane.

Not Jason.

Someone else.

Someone I never expected.

“Please.”

The door opened wider.

And standing there was…

Victoria Hale.

The woman who had erased my daughter’s birth records.

She looked terrified.

Not powerful.

Not dangerous.

Afraid.

“Emma,” she whispered.

“You need to listen to me.”

I held the necklace tightly.

“Why?”

Victoria looked at Lily sleeping behind me.

Then back at me.

“Because Diane Bennett has been lying to you since before your daughter was born.”

I stepped back.

“What do you want?”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“To save you.”

I didn’t believe her.

Not yet.

But then she said the one thing that made my entire body freeze.

“The truth about Lily…”

She swallowed.

“…is not what Jason thinks.”

A pause.

“The truth is that Lily was never the secret Diane was protecting.”

I stared.

“Then what was?”

Victoria looked directly into my eyes.

“You are.”

And in that moment…

May you like

I realized my entire life had been a carefully designed trap.

A trap that started long before I ever met Jason Bennett.
