CHAPTER 17 The Inheritance My Father Hid

CHAPTER 17 The Inheritance My Father Hid

The courtroom was silent.

Not the ordinary kind of silence.

The kind where everyone is waiting for one sentence to change everything.

And Diane Bennett had just done exactly that.

The inheritance your father left you.

The words stayed in my mind.

Inheritance.

A word that didn’t belong to my life.

My father wasn’t wealthy.

He wasn’t powerful.

He was a man who wore the same brown jacket for years because he said it was still perfectly good.

He packed his lunch every morning.

He fixed broken furniture instead of buying new things.

He taught me that a person’s value was never measured by what they owned.

So why was Diane talking about an inheritance?

I looked at Diane.

“What inheritance?”

She smiled.

Not kindly.

Almost like she had been waiting years to say those words.

“You really don’t know.”

I stood.

The judge looked at me.

“Mrs. Parker, please remain seated.”

I sat back down.

But my eyes never left Diane.

“What are you talking about?”

Diane leaned back.

“Your father spent his entire life pretending to be ordinary.”

Rachel immediately stood.

“Your Honor, I object to this line of questioning.”

The judge looked at her.

“On what basis?”

“Mrs. Bennett is attempting to introduce speculation.”

Diane’s attorney smiled.

“Your Honor, the evidence will show that Edward Parker concealed significant assets from his own daughter.”

The courtroom shifted.

I felt everyone looking at me.

Like I was suddenly someone else.

Someone with secrets.

Someone dangerous.

But I knew the truth.

I had nothing.

The judge allowed Diane’s attorney to continue.

“Mrs. Parker.”

I looked forward.

“Did your father ever discuss financial matters with you?”

“No.”

“Did he ever mention investments?”

“No.”

“Properties?”

“No.”

“Trust funds?”

“No.”

The attorney turned toward the judge.

“Interesting.”

I hated that word.

Interesting.

Like my life was a puzzle for strangers to solve.

He continued.

“Did your father give you this necklace?”

I touched it.

“Yes.”

“Before his death?”

“Yes.”

“Did he tell you not to remove it?”

I hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I looked down.

“He said it was important.”

The attorney smiled.

“Important.”

He repeated the word.

“Or valuable?”

My stomach tightened.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s exactly the point.”

Rachel stood.

“Objection.”

The judge nodded.

“Sustained.”

But the damage was already done.

The suggestion was planted.

That was Diane’s method.

She didn’t need people to believe a lie immediately.

She only needed them to question the truth.

During the break, Rachel pulled me aside.

“Emma.”

“What?”

“There’s something you need to prepare for.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Diane may have access to information we don’t have.”

“About my father?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Rachel lowered her voice.

“Because your father’s estate records were sealed.”

I frowned.

“Sealed?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She looked serious.

“Because someone requested confidentiality.”

“Who?”

Rachel looked at the papers.

“Diane Bennett.”

My heart dropped.

“She sealed my father’s estate?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Rachel didn’t answer.

Because we both knew.

Diane didn’t hide things without a reason.

After court ended, we returned to the hotel.

But something was different.

The world outside felt unfamiliar.

Reporters were waiting.

Cameras followed us.

People shouted questions.

“Emma, did your father leave you millions?”

“Were you hiding your identity?”

“Did you manipulate Jason Bennett?”

I ignored them.

Because none of those questions mattered.

Only one did.

What had my father hidden?

That night, Michael arrived with a file.

“I found something.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He placed it on the table.

“Your father’s original estate documents.”

My hands froze.

“How?”

“Victoria helped.”

I opened the folder.

Inside were documents I had never seen.

A trust agreement.

A legal statement.

And a letter.

My father’s handwriting.

I couldn’t breathe.

“Emma.”

I touched the paper.

“Read it.”

I unfolded the letter.

My father’s words appeared.

My dear Emma,

I don’t know when you will read this.

I hope it is many years from now.

I hope I am there beside you.

But if you are reading this, then something happened.

Something forced you to search for answers.

My eyes filled with tears.

Because he knew.

He knew this day might come.

I need you to understand something.

The most valuable thing I leave you is not money.

I paused.

Then continued.

It is the truth.

My hands shook.

For years, people believed I worked for Bennett Holdings.

That is only partially true.

I looked at Michael.

He whispered:

I was not just an employee.

I was one of the original investors who helped create the company.

My breath stopped.

No.

That couldn’t be true.

When I discovered what Diane Bennett was doing, I tried to stop her.

I realized the company I helped build was being transformed into something dangerous.

My eyes moved faster.

I removed my ownership before she could take it.

Ownership.

The word hit me.

I placed my shares into a protected trust.

I stopped.

Shares.

Ownership.

My father wasn’t poor.

He was hiding.

Emma, the trust belongs to you.

I couldn’t move.

Michael looked at me.

“Your father owned part of Bennett Holdings.”

I whispered:

“How much?”

Michael opened another document.

His expression was serious.

“Twenty-three percent.”

The room went silent.

Twenty-three percent.

Enough to change everything.

Enough to challenge Diane.

Enough to destroy the empire she built.

Jason arrived moments later.

When he saw the documents, he froze.

“What is that?”

I looked at him.

“The truth.”

He picked up the papers.

His eyes widened.

“My mother knew.”

“Yes.”

“That’s why she wanted the necklace.”

“Yes.”

“That’s why she wanted Lily.”

“Yes.”

Jason sat down.

Because finally…

he understood.

Diane wasn’t afraid of losing money.

She was afraid of losing control of a company she believed belonged to her.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Hello?”

No one spoke.

Then I heard a voice.

Diane.

“Congratulations, Emma.”

My blood went cold.

“You finally found out.”

“What do you want?”

“You have your father’s shares.”

“Yes.”

“And you think that makes you powerful.”

I said nothing.

Diane continued.

“But there is something your father never told you.”

“What?”

A pause.

“The trust has a condition.”

My heart tightened.

“What condition?”

Diane laughed softly.

“One that means you cannot control those shares.”

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Her voice became colder.

“Your father knew you were young.”

A pause.

“So he chose someone else to protect them until you were ready.”

My stomach dropped.

“Who?”

Silence.

Then Diane answered:

“Your husband.”

I froze.

No.

“Jason?”

“Yes.”

I looked at him.

His face changed.

Because he knew.

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?”

Diane laughed.

“Ask him.”

The call ended.

Slowly…

I turned toward Jason.

And the expression on his face told me everything.

There was another secret.

One more.

The biggest one.

May you like

Because my father hadn’t just left me an inheritance.

He had placed my future in the hands of the man who betrayed me.
