Chapter 11 - The Voice On The Tape.

They returned to the gala building through the underground corridor because the rain had turned the avenue into a sheet of reflected light.

By then, emergency power had restored the ballroom's side lamps, but the chandelier remained dark above the confused guests.

Hale chose a secured administrative office for the recording.

Claire, Maya, Vanessa, Grant, and two investigators crowded around a government laptop while the silver drive rested inside an evidence reader.

Grant looked older under fluorescent light than he had beneath the ballroom chandeliers.

Vanessa stood as far from him as the room allowed.

Claire did not blame her.

The audio began with ordinary cockpit checks.

Claire heard her own voice from fourteen months earlier, calm and professional, discussing wind, fuel, and route conditions with her copilot.

Then came the first warning tone.

Maya closed her eyes.

A second alert followed.

Then a third.

Claire heard herself request an immediate return to base after the stabilization system locked unexpectedly.

The reply from mission command arrived through static.

"Northstar, continue on assigned route while technical verifies the alert."

Claire looked at Hale.

"That isn't your voice."

"No."

They all recognized the man who answered next.

Marcus Vane.

On the recording, Claire challenged the instruction.

"Control, I have a repeated stabilization fault and an unreliable override. I recommend we turn back now."

Vane answered after a pause.

"The unit has been cleared for operation. Continue mission."

Maya leaned toward the speaker.

"There."

A quieter voice in the background asked Vane whether he had reviewed the prior failure notice.

Vane muted the channel for several seconds.

When he returned, his voice was harder.

"Northstar, your system is within approved limits. Maintain route."

Claire felt anger settle into something colder.

The recording continued.

Minutes later, the controls began failing in sequence.

The cockpit filled with warnings.

Claire heard crew members calling out procedures, Maya reporting rising heat in the equipment bay, and Vane repeatedly instructing them to maintain mission objectives until the situation became impossible to deny.

Then came the part Claire remembered without needing the audio.

She ordered the crew to abandon every nonessential task and prepare for emergency diversion.

She crawled into the rear service passage to release the jammed controls manually.

Her breathing became rough over the headset.

Someone asked whether she could make it back to the cockpit.

Her recorded answer was immediate.

"Get everyone ready. I am not leaving anyone on this aircraft."

Vanessa looked at Claire's shawl.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that the scars she had exposed were not symbols of embarrassment.

They were evidence of the moment Claire chose to stay where the danger was worst.

The final minutes contained no dramatic speech.

Only checklists, instructions, strained breathing, and the sound of professionals refusing to give up on one another.

When the recording ended, nobody moved.

Grant broke the silence.

"Marcus knew."

Hale nodded.

"He knew enough to stop the mission."

Vanessa looked at her father.

"And you helped hide the proof."

Grant could not meet her eyes.

A knock came at the door.

One of the investigators stepped outside, then returned immediately.

"Colonel Vane is back in the ballroom."

Claire stared at him.

"Back?"

"He walked through the front entrance two minutes ago."

Hale stood.

"Why would he come back?"

The investigator held out a phone showing a live camera feed.

Marcus Vane was standing beneath the dark chandelier near the gala podium.

He had a microphone in one hand.

And two hundred guests were turning toward him.
