Chapter 14 - The Hearing Behind Closed Doors.

Washington looked colorless beneath the early morning rain.

Claire arrived at the federal review building wearing her service uniform instead of the white gown that had turned her scars into the center of a ballroom.

The uniform felt simpler.

It did not ask anyone to interpret her body before listening to her words.

Hale sat beside her in the waiting room.

Neither had slept.

Vanessa, Grant, and Maya were scheduled for separate interviews on other floors.

Marcus Vane had retained counsel and declined to answer questions beyond formal statements.

Claire expected the hearing to feel like vindication.

Instead, it felt like returning to the same locked room with a different key.

Three review officials questioned her for nearly four hours.

They played sections of the recovered audio.

They compared her original mission report with the altered final summary.

They reviewed the failure notice, the diagnostic records, and the messages Vane sent to Vanessa.

Then they asked the question Claire had feared since the night of the mission.

"Commander Bennett, knowing what you know now, would you have made the same decisions in the aircraft?"

Claire did not answer quickly.

"No."

One reviewer looked surprised.

Claire continued.

"I would have turned the aircraft around the first time the system warning appeared, even if mission command ordered me to continue."

"You were operating under valid instructions at the time."

"Valid is not the same as correct."

Hale looked toward her.

Claire kept speaking.

"I brought everyone home, but I also learned that rank does not remove my responsibility to question information that conflicts with what I can see in front of me."

That answer was not designed to clear her.

It was simply true.

By late afternoon, the panel recessed.

Claire waited alone in the hallway until Vanessa appeared from another interview room.

The sparkling gown was gone.

She wore a plain navy suit and carried no jewelry except a small watch.

"They asked about the shawl."

Claire raised an eyebrow.

"I hope that wasn't the most important part of their day."

Vanessa almost smiled.

"I told them Marcus encouraged me to make you react publicly."

"Why?"

"Because if you lost your temper, he planned to use it as evidence that you were unstable under pressure."

Claire let out a quiet breath.

The cruelty of the ballroom moment suddenly became more calculated than it had seemed.

Vanessa looked at the floor.

"I gave him exactly what he wanted until you refused to react."

"You still made your own choice."

"I know."

That mattered to Claire.

Vanessa was no longer hiding behind her father or Marcus.

The hearing panel called Claire back shortly before sunset.

The chairperson read the preliminary findings carefully.

The evidence did not support allegations of reckless command conduct.

The Northstar report would be corrected.

Claire's withheld promotion review would be reinstated.

A separate investigation would address evidence removal, procurement misrepresentation, and improper interference in the original inquiry.

Claire should have felt relief.

Instead, she thought about twenty-two people who had spent fourteen months wondering whether the world believed they had nearly caused their own disaster.

Outside the hearing room, Hale handed her a sealed envelope.

"This came from the crew."

Claire opened it.

Inside was a simple card signed by every person aboard Northstar.

The message contained only one sentence.

WE NEVER DOUBTED WHO BROUGHT US HOME.

Claire's eyes burned, but she did not look away.

Then Hale handed her a second envelope.

This one carried an official seal.

"What's that?"

"Your promotion board decision."

Claire stared at him.

"Already?"

Hale nodded.

"They reached it before the gala."

Claire opened the envelope.

Her expression changed.

Hale watched her carefully.

"Well?"

Claire looked up.

"They didn't promote me."

Hale frowned.

Then Claire turned the page around.

The board had recommended her for something larger than the position she expected.

May you like

A command of her own rescue operations group.

And the final approval ceremony was scheduled for the same ballroom where Vanessa had tried to shame her.
