Chapter 7 - The Survivor Who Stayed Quiet.

Claire had not seen Dr. Maya Torres since the closed Northstar hearing.
Maya had been a civilian systems engineer assigned to evaluate the stabilization equipment during the mission.
She had also been the last person Claire pulled through the rear hatch before smoke overtook the cabin.
Afterward, Maya stopped answering reporters, colleagues, and eventually Claire.
The silence had always bothered her.
Now her name was circled on a seating chart inside a car connected to Marcus Vane.
Hale searched the gala registration database.
Maya had accepted an invitation six days earlier under a private security designation.
She had requested a side entrance and no public seating assignment.
"Someone removed her from the final list," Hale said.
Claire looked at him.
"Who had permission?"
"Event command, protocol staff, and me."
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"And Marcus?"
Hale did not answer immediately.
"Marcus advised security planning."
Claire started toward the elevator.
"Then Maya may have arrived without anyone noticing."
They returned to the gala hall through the underground passage connecting the two buildings.
The ballroom had been placed under a quiet security hold.
Guests remained at their tables while musicians played softly and staff moved with forced normality.
Vanessa's earlier stunt had become the favorite whispered subject in the room.
Claire could feel people looking at her shawl as she passed.
She ignored them.
At the service entrance, Luis Ramirez recognized Maya's photograph immediately.
"She came through here before dinner."
"Was she alone?"
"Yes."
"Where did she go?"
Luis pointed toward the mezzanine level.
"A man in uniform met her near the old conference rooms."
Claire and Hale exchanged a look.
The conference level had been closed for renovations.
Security found the stairwell door unlocked.
Upstairs, the hallway lights were dim and half the rooms were covered with protective plastic.
Claire heard movement behind Conference Room C.
She knocked once.
"Maya?"
No answer.
She tried the handle.
Locked.
Hale called for a master key.
Before it arrived, the door opened from inside.
Maya Torres stood there wearing a dark green evening dress beneath a borrowed hotel coat.
Her face was pale with anger rather than fear.
"Claire."
Claire stared at her.
"What are you doing up here?"
Maya looked past her toward Hale.
"Trying to decide which decorated officer I can still trust."
Hale accepted the accusation without flinching.
"Start with the one who found you."
Maya stepped aside.
On the conference table sat a slim laptop and a sealed envelope.
"Marcus contacted me three weeks ago."
Vanessa entered behind them.
Maya recognized her immediately.
"Of course a Cole is here."
Vanessa stiffened.
"I'm not my father."
"Tonight, that remains to be seen."
Claire moved between them.
"What did Marcus want?"
Maya opened the laptop.
"He wanted the backup I made before Northstar took off."
Claire felt her pulse change.
"Backup of what?"
Maya looked directly at her.
"The failure notice."
She tapped the screen.
An engineering report appeared, signed electronically six weeks before the mission.
At the bottom were three approval acknowledgments.
Grant Cole.
Marcus Vane.
And Rear Admiral Thomas Hale.
Vanessa looked from the screen to Hale.
Claire did the same.
The room became unbearably quiet.
Hale did not deny the signature.
"I can explain."
May you like
Claire's voice turned hard.
"You should start now."
