Chapter 12 - The Speech He Was Never Supposed To Give.

Marcus Vane did not look like a man trying to escape.

He looked like a man who believed the room still belonged to him.

By the time Claire and Hale reached the ballroom doors, Vane had already asked the guests for their attention.

The main chandelier remained dark, leaving him beneath the pale emergency lights with an expression of practiced concern.

"Ladies and gentlemen, tonight has been disrupted by rumors, personal accusations, and a private business dispute that never should have entered this room."

Claire stopped just inside the doorway.

Hale quietly signaled security not to move yet.

Vanessa came up beside them.

Her face hardened when she heard Vane continue.

"Certain individuals are attempting to rewrite a difficult mission in order to protect careers and shift financial responsibility."

Grant whispered behind them.

"He's doing exactly what he told me he would do."

Vane mentioned no names at first.

He did not need to.

Guests looked toward Claire.

Some looked toward Grant.

The uncertainty was enough for him.

Claire understood the tactic immediately.

A direct accusation could be disproved.

A suggestion could survive for years.

Vane finally said her name.

"Commander Bennett deserves respect for bringing her crew home, but heroism does not place anyone above questions about judgment."

Vanessa moved toward the ballroom.

Claire caught her wrist gently.

"Do not give him the scene he wants."

Vanessa looked at her.

"He used me to give him one already."

Claire released her.

"Then choose what you do next."

Vane raised a folder.

"I have documentation showing that concerns about Northstar were exaggerated after the incident by parties facing professional consequences."

Maya leaned close to Hale.

"That folder is the revised assessment."

"The one Marcus signed?"

"Yes."

Hale's expression became almost amused.

"Then he brought us part of our evidence."

Vane invited Grant Cole to come forward and explain that Cole Aeronautics had followed every required procedure.

Grant did not move.

Vane's confidence flickered.

"Grant?"

The entire ballroom turned toward the doors.

Grant stepped inside.

His wet shirt had been replaced by a plain hotel jacket, making him look less like a powerful executive and more like a tired father.

"No, Marcus."

Vane lowered the microphone slightly.

"This isn't the time."

Grant walked forward.

"That's what you told me fourteen months ago."

A murmur crossed the room.

Vane tried to interrupt.

Grant kept speaking.

"Then you told me the same thing when the recorder disappeared, when the report changed, and when Commander Bennett was blamed for a system we already knew had problems."

Vanessa stared at her father.

Claire watched Vane's face lose its polish.

He recovered quickly.

"Grant is under extraordinary stress."

"I'm under the weight of my own decisions."

Grant looked toward Claire.

"That is not the same thing."

Vane placed the folder on the podium.

"We should handle this through proper channels."

Claire almost smiled at the phrase.

Proper channels had protected him for fourteen months.

Before Hale could step forward, Vanessa walked past Claire and entered the center aisle.

She was still wearing the sparkling gown from the moment she ripped away Claire's shawl.

Everyone recognized her.

She stopped ten feet from Vane.

"Tell them who gave me the photograph."

Vane stared at her.

"Vanessa, sit down."

"Tell them who told me to expose her scars tonight."

The ballroom went silent again.

Vane's hand tightened around the microphone.

May you like

And Vanessa reached into her evening bag and held up her phone.

"Because I kept every message."
